I deleted my thread on CA med schools not helping out Californians because it was getting ugly. I was merely suggesting that a public school like UCSD is undiverse because in a class of 126 (class of 2006) there is not one african american student.

The thread turned into a race issue with people turning on each other. My pal PCOM went a little overboard and maybe I did too. I don't hate or envy any group of people for being over-represented, I would merely like to see more black doctors because many black people simply prefer to see black doctors not because they are racist but because of incidences like Tuskegee.

Furthermore the attacks on me are unwarranted. If you don't know about me then don't assume I call for diversity because I want an easy way. I made it to med school and had a few choices. I worked hard and did well on my MCATs.

Finally racial diversity while not the only diversity we need in med school is the most important. Why? Well if you have many of one type of race and none of another you not only lack a good racial mix but cultural differences and life experiences of these different cultures aren't represented.

m2006 said that there weren't any in the class of 2006. I'm not sure how s/he confirmed that info.

I seriously doubt that there aren't any in the entire school.

I looked at their class photo and also my bestfriend is a MS1 at UCSD.

i'm still withdrawing dammit! a hold for possible interview?!
at UCSD? they gotta be kidding me.

As said before...distrust by itself does not serve as an ethical justification for AA.

Diversity could be a valid reason, but not mere distrust.

That 12% has to come from somewhere. Some racial group is over represented at UCSD.

"Zero sum" What does that concept mean again?

Q: Which campus is more diverse?

A student body that consists of:
A) 1 white liberal and 1 black liberal
B) 1 white conservative and 1 white liberal

Weren't you the one who turned it into a race issue from the get-go? Didn't you say things like "asians won't practice in south central," or something to that effect? Didn't you say that the only asians at county hospitals are residents who will bounce up out of there once residency is over? Isn't that implying that the only race that must give a damn about the poor are black people? I don't think that that is "merely suggesting that a public school is undiverse." Heck you coulda used any other race in your statements, it doesn't matter. Making assumptions that one will choose to help one group of people over another because of the color of their skin or the slant of their eyes isn't right.

12%?

12% blacks should make up a medical school class because they make up 12% of the population.

You're reminding him of the bonehead statement he made, ucla. He doesn't want to be reminded of it, that's why he deleted the thread.

Seriously, though, under real admissions based on merit, blacks usually make up 1% to 2%. Hmm...UC must be a statistical variant.

I still stand by what I said earlier. You tend to blame society for your problems. More med students should be experienced, etc.

All that being said, there is no way that you can accuse the UC's of not trying to be diverse. I feel they try better than 90% of all med schools. If anything, I would say the UC's are going a bit to far. If a guy with a 3.4 and a 26 MCAT can get an interview at UCLA just becuase he is experienced and a URM, I think something is wrong.
