so I've alreaday gotten in to my first choice (UCSF), but Stanford is my undergrad, so I was excited about it too. But I got rejected post-secondary. I don't understand how I could get interviews at a number of "great" (top 10) schools, and some acceptances, but not even get a chance at Stanford. And come on, Stanford is no Harvard... Well, at least this means the schools actually look at other things in the application, and not just make each of us into a number (although, that probably would've helped me). Anyway, I'm frustrated.

Sounds to me like you don't really have that much to be frustrated about. I just wish I could make a post like this, but congratulations on your UCSF acceptance!

Chill. Stanford interviews far fewer applicants and has a smaller class size than most big top-10s. End of story. 😴

I love these threads!!! This is right up there with "I have a 47 and a 4.2, do I have a chance," or "Harvard Or Hopkins? Please help!!!!"

i think some medical schools are hard on their undergrads that apply. I didnt even get an interview with my undergrad's med school and i had a publication with the med school!

Perhaps it was because your transcript didn't include Social Skills 101.

I mean, seriously, dude... there's a lot of totally valid things to bitch about in this hellish process. Why you got accepted to UCSF and not Stanford is not one of those things. Not on an open forum to hundreds of people who would kill to have your opportunity.

+pity+

Did they ask you during the interview where else you were being interviewed? I know for certain that Stanford conducts research on matriculation statistics regarding their applicant pool. There is a report, in pdf available, which shows that applicants who had interviews at other top ten schools, like harvard, wash u, upenn, tend to matriculate into those schools. Unless, you made it clear to them that Stanford was your number one choice and that you would turn down all other offers, then the are likely to reject you. Not because you are not qualified, but because they know that most applicants matriculate elsewhere. You can contact the admissions office for this report. I have one published in 1999 and 2000 application cycle.

Let it be known that in the eyes of many, Harvard is no Stanford.

to all of you people who seem to think that people with good stats arent in the same boat...

you're wrong!!

its not my fault that i actually studied during my undergrad years instead of fooling around in the basements of some nasty fraternity. you have only yourself to blame.

so yeh, my name is xxxx, i have a 3.9 GPA from an ivy league school, a 38 MCAT and am still really worried and frustrated by this process.

and i have the right to express my feelings.

good day to you all

Do you think the rest of us didn't study?

It's OK to still be worried and frustrated, but don't expect sympathy if you get accepted by Cornell and Columbia but get rejected by Penn and Harvard because those are all really good options.

and i have the right to express my feelings.

It's an open board . You have the right to express your feelings and the rest of the posters have the right to make fun of them.
good day to you all

It's OK to feel worried, but try to have some understanding for the people on the board who are struggling just to get in despite tons of hard work.

sounds like a wonderful time.

Yeah, I really think SDN represents the premeds that are partying all the time in the frat basement instead of studying 🙄 . Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go get crunk, study for my physics test, and apply for a med school in the Caribbean.

+1.

I wonder if some people purposely make these threads just to get a couple dozen slam responses.

Wow, what a mature reply. The OP and her only defendant thus far have a right to state how they have felt during this process. The mature answer might have been to give her any insight (if you had any) about Stanford or the nature of the admissions process. To attack people because they have what you don't (and what you want) indicates a certain lack of maturity (and certainly tons of jealousy). I think the central issue for the OP was that her undergraduate institution rejected her not that she wanted sympathy for not getting into a GREAT school. I am sure it has to feel a little disheartening when the institution you were at for 4 years rejected you, but that is how things are somehow.

#1: they let you into med school? jesus. no wonder so many doctors have so little perspective and empathy when it comes to their patients.

#2: studying hard does not necessarily equal high gpa. partying does not necessarily equal low gpa. sure, there's a correlation, but it's not ALWAYS a causation. again, letting people into top med schools without basic knowledge of scientific principles like correlation and causation. sheesh.

#3: even in cases where a lack of studying did, in fact, cause low undergrad grades, partying is not usually the cause for most of us. try full time school, part time work, and taking care of a dying family member when you're 19. see how well you do in school.

#4: yes, you have a right to express your feelings. but, we have a right to express ours, too, dear.

#5: some of us aren't 22. we've lived lives that have given a bigger perspective as to what to freak out/get worried/get frustrated with. and, in fact, many many 22 year olds also have gained that insight (i've seen them on this board). a 3.8 and a 38 show you can jump through hoops and be a good boy/girl. but they show nothing about how you live your life, how well you think independently, how in tune and empathetic you are. and the more you deal with the medical community as a patient or the caregiver of a patient, the less where someone went to school, what their scores were, how smart they are matter, and the more those things like their compassion and ability to listen and try to stand in your shoes do. this brings me back to #1.

oh, and by the way, as a REAL ivy graduate, i resent you considering stanturd an ivy ;-). there. there's my immature comment of the day, in the air of this whole thread. [edit: this comment not really meant to reflect on stanford as a whole. i have nothing against it. fine school, in fact. it just seems 90% of the people i encounter from there are a$$hats. please, if you're inthe 10%, do not take offense.]

Sorry, but some people need a reality check now and then.

Trophy Hunters especially.

Insight from what my girlfriend's applications to Ivy Ph.D. programs in English: schools tend to be averse to hiring their own graduates, much less admitting their own undergrads (immediately, at least) into grad school. Look at you school's course catalog or ask a close professor—schools want students to branch out. This prevents them from stagnating on the same minds and perspectives.

So don't worry. Good luck at UCSF.

You can't focus on the negative. You got into your top choice school. I know that it hurts your pride to be rejected by your alma mater, but don't let it bug you as you got into someplace even better that you like more. Have fun at UCSF!

Dont you hate it when you're at the urinal; minding your own business and then some other dude just waltzes in and uses the urinal right next to you? EVERY OTHER STALL PEOPLE!

Maybe they didn't let you in because they recognized getting in was going to do little more for them and you than to satisfy your ego. After all, you stated that S wasn't your top choice, and then proceeded to rip your own alma mater unecessarily (and inaccurately). I wouldn't be surprised if that came through in your essays and interview.

hey guess what xxxx....same stats here, actual ivy league school, yet somehow managed to pull it off while spending a significant amount of time partying my ass off in "some nasty fraternity"...good luck with your nervous breakdown when you're working ungodly hours in residency and realize that you spent the best years of your life in a library.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be happy that you got in anywhere, no less your FIRST choice. Christ, learn to be a little more humble next time. I am still waiting for my first allopathic acceptance AND I have had only one interview. It was last week and I am waiting for a response.

Congratulations you got into UCSF....thats great now go be thankful! 🙄

You do have absolutely EVERY right to express your feelings. However, its like me getting into Loyola (my top choice) and then crying that I didn't get into all the other schools I got into. Be thankful for what you have. SIMPLE!

Just for the randomness of this process: I got into UCSF and haven't had a response from Stanford post-secondary. My PI wrote me a LOR specifically for Stanford and asks me about it - and all I can say is I don't know why. Although I did get rejected pre-secondary from UCLA/Drew (and my entire PS was about serving the underserved). I'm not complaining (So don't everyone start attacking me!) but it is just random.

why does one have to rub their achievements in others faces....this thread I think is not needed

Lock it up and throw away the key... 😡

Agreed. I really think this person is being obnoxious. More than likely, he/she isn't doing it on purpose but it still comes off that way.
