I got another rejection letter today from Tulane University. This makes it two rejection letters now. I got two interviews to on the east coast, but still I feel like a loser. Everyone else is getting like 12 interviews and I only got two so far plus some rejections. How is everyone paying for travel expenses? The places I will have to be at to are pretty expensive to travel to. I can't find cheap rates anywhere... getting depressed now...

I haven't gotten rejection letters OR interviews yet...be glad you got something! And if it makes you feel any better, I applied to University of Washington and I have NO idea how I'd get there if they actually want to interview me (I'm out-of-state so I'm not holding my breath!

Count your blessings, Mr. Anon!
Congrats on your interviews already. Wow. I would be so happy if I were you. By the way, if you don't mind sharing, what are your stats and what two schools do you have an interview with?

Good luck with your interviews and the rest of schools.

You guys should feel lucky that you even have a chance to apply to UW SOM. I live three hours away from Seattle by car and there is zero chance of getting in to UW SOM, even though that school is at the top of my list!

Nonono, no losers here!

I applied to 12 schools and only got interviews at two. I'm a happy MS-II now. Keep your spirits high and your nose to the grindstone!

Qwit yer bitchin' !!

Keep in mind that some of us have had to go elsewhere for our medical eduation. I applied for 4 years straight, have good life experience (I'm now 35, was 34 when I started med school), good grades, average MCATs. Spent THOUSANDS of dollars to AACOMAS, AMCAS, secondary applications, MCATs, etc. I was waitlisted, too.

Even with the number of applicants declining (see NEJM 343: 3, p. 213), many of us are rejected. I ended up saying, "forget about it -- I'm not waiting any longer," and leaving the country. I'll deal with the extra hoops to jump through, the prejudice and misperceptions of IMGs when I get back. Just remember, as long as I do well on Step I, I'm as good as anyone else (US school or not).

So it's not the end of the world. Count your blessings that you've gotten two interviews. Even though I've gone "international," we all know that life is much easier if you're a US grad. So good luck.

Whoa, slow down there. I have no idea how many schools you applied to, but my friends who have applied in past years typically got maybe 5 or 6 interviews out of the 15-20 schools they applied to. Even my friends who are going to some of the "top" schools in the country (Harvard, Yale, Hopkins) got rejected from other schools. At best, this is an arbitrary system that does not make a lot of sense. No one likes rejections, but you need to take heart in the two interviews you have coming up, and make the most out of them -- the fact that you have these interviews at all means that those schools consider you to be an extremely competitive applicant, and are seriously considering you for admission. Make the most of this opportunity.

Thanks everyone for their comforting words. I still haven't heard from most of the other schools yet and I expect more interviews to come. How did everyone send their secondaries?? I sent it by regular mail... does it take an unusually long time for the schools to get my mail. Reason is, is that some of the schools say that they just received everything necessary about three weeks to a month after I sent the secondary. I got interviews at VCU and New York Medical... the expenses are staggering!!

Remember how many folks are applying to each school, and that hundreds will get secondaries. The processing is no small task!

I sent mine by regular mail and kept a photocopy. Two weeks later I called to confirm that they had received it. Everyone had. But if you're nervous, delivery confirmation from the USPS might be another route if you don't want to fork out $$ for long distance calls.

I've sent all of my apps / secondaries via certified and/or return reciept mail (although I never received my receipt from EVMS...my check cleared a week later) and kept copies of everything! So far, everything has been getting to where it's supposed to but I didn't want to take any chances!

How are you people paying for 15-20 schools to see your AMCAS? That's $750-1000!! And is that really necessary to get a few interviews? I'd planned on applying to three, possibly four schools.

*disclaimer* All opinions are worth
what you paid for them.

You forgot to add in the cost of secondaries: 15-20 x 65 is another $975 to $1300. Then add travel expenses

Seriously, though. You do not HAVE to apply to that many schools. It's simply a personal choice. I only applied to 5 schools. If you do the research, it seems like you can usually narrow it down to a more reasonable number. Then again, it's an insane process and there is safety in numbers...

I agree with Herc. Take the time to really narrow your selection down to a handfull of schools that you: 1. Think you can get into, and 2. would actually want to go to. I made the mistake of listeneing to my peers and applied to 19 schools! Everybody kept saying I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn't apply to 15-20 schools.

Well, I got secondaries from all 19 schools, and sent back only seven of them. I realized I would not even want to attend half of the schools I had applied to. I had picked them based only on their GPA/MCAT score averages. But it was too late to get the $$$ back! At least I didn't waste anothe $1000+ on all those useless secondaries for schools I didn't even want to go to!

Summation: Apply to a safe number, but there's no need to go nuts if your stats are decent

I applied to 12 schools and was sent 9 secondaries. I haven't heard from northwestern or case western at all. has any one else heard. Got one rejection from stanford.

Oh well, time to wait and see about interviews

We're all born into rich families? What happens to us middle class men and women?

Hrm... looks like that's about two months' worth of hard working to save up for those expenses. Ewww! I should have my car wrecked, sue someone for damages, and use that money instead!

You're kidding right? Try one interview and 15 rejections. Then, you tell me if you feel like a loser. What you are not realizing is that some people get NO interviews at all. NONE. Not one or two. ZERO. You just have to hang it there. Most of the medical schools are drowning in seas of apps everyday. Just keep waiting and shine at the two you have.
There are two kinds of people in this rat race: those in the lifeboats, and everyone else in the water with nothing on but a life jacket. You're in the boat. Be thankful for that.

dont worry buddy, life is too short to worry all the time..if you get into med school, great, if you dont, good too..you'll have more time to enjoy life!
