Well I guess I am a bit of a homo-but do you guys have any books from med school that you just loved and will keep forever and probably even buy future new editions even when you are long done with medschool? Well my favs are def:
ROBBINS! numero uno by far. The latest 7th edit was my bible-I read each chapter 9-10 times during 2nd and 3rd year. I actually used it so much 2nd year that it fell apart near the end nad had to buy a replacment! My all time fav!

Costanzo physiology!-also another great one 2nd and 1st year and 3rd year. I also wore this one out and am on copy 2-just bought the newest edition-best physio book ever-and honestly i was a total physio nut and read bolon and boulpap, guyton, gangon, and 2 others and still costanz is the best

FA step 1 and BRS path-2 great review book i still use a ton during third yera since i know every page like the back of my hand. I just bougth the new brs path as a third year! it worked great on my medicine shelf!

Katzung pharmacology-the big book-one of my all time favs- definetly a keeper

Harrisons-LOVE that book-read the hell out of it 2nd and third year-will always have a copy of the newest in my life even though im not doing medicine

Ok as u can tell i am a book nut and dont like lectures and few review books-anyone else have favs??

Netter's but then again there is no text. 😀 I also liked Beckman's OB/GYN.

Just wondering...do you need the offensive title for any reason?

ROBBINS??? As in the Path book?? I can't even begin to describe how much I HATE that book. I just haven't found the appeal yet. I say yet b/c I am a first year in the middle of Path and find that the book is impossible to read w/out falling asleep.

I guess I can hold out hope for clinical years usage. Otherwise I have a $100 ugly paper weight.

wow, all those exclamation marks in referene to textbooks? you realize you're a freak show right? when you first said robbins i thought you meant TOM ROBBINS, a great fiction writer, but wow, this thread is weird.

Mota-just so you know, rabbit kidnapping is a serious crime. Furthermore, its a hate crime. As a member of "save-the-rabbits.org" I have to protest.

Where the heck is the homo connection?
and yes, it is offensive unless you mean you are a homosexual (GAY)...then it's cool.

Now the full extent of your troll nature is revealed - no human being would read any Robbins chapter 9-10 times. The one about rereading FA during 3rd year was a good one too. But please, if you want a wider audience for your trolling, get rid of the offensive titles.

Oh. Well. In that case, carry on.

If you look at the top corner, its right and left paw kind of look like rabbit ears.

Man I hate when people use the word "homo." It just sounds like something a 10 year old would say. Grow up OP.

#1- Robbins- 6th Ed. I have the 7th, but I like its predecessor better.
#2- Netter.
#3- Visual Mnemonics for Pathology.

I like picture books. 🙂

The op probably works for the publishing company and just want to promote the book.

What about 'queer'?

I went to a couple of meetings last week about issues facing LGBT people and I noticed a couple of the guys kept referring to themselves as queer.

Personally I feel that homo, queer, gay, can all have negative conotations depending on how you use them. You can use 'homosexual' but its really a mouthful and also I think gay sounds better.

My god people-why is it every single post-people pick it apart and try to start arguing. Even one other post I just read on another forum by Ron Dudek-and him talking about a new edition of a histo book. Then somebody posts about having itand saying it is good. Then immediatly somebody posts that he is really the same guy and just posting to make his book look good.

I am not a troll for one. 2nd I am really sorry for the use of homo-I guess I still hear that a lot when just saying that something you do is pretty bizarre-really I did not know its offensive-I have gay friends that say it and I say it around and they know its just a saying. So it was just a saying-was not meant to be offensive.

Ha for third-ask some residents-lots of my medicine residents still use FA for quick reference, especially to random pharm facts and some other random quick factrs. I am not saying they carry it around. But I used it a ton this year for pharm. None of the third year books have a good pharm intergration so I used FA for pharm and micro during third year to review bugs and drugs ingeneral and for step 2. Step 1 is no different then step 2 in content really you know.

And actually i did read robbins 9-10 timse over the past 2 years. I read it about 7 times during 2nd year-all I did was read that book and study pharm. I didnt go to lectrures, use any lecture notes, read any review books really except brs path and I liked the book-i thought path was interesting. I thought it was much better explanation of path then any of my profs gave-plus i liked the pictures.

So geez people lighten up-the thread was just a silly thread to see if any other poeple had some embarrasing stories of how they actually liked any books-I know it is "nerdy"-that was the point-any of us feel kind of nerdy for liking some books-and not one person posted about that instead they all tried to argue or tell me my post was a troll-lighten up!!

What about 'queer'?

Yes, the word "queer" has been embraced by the the, uhm... queer community in the last few years. It has to do with reclaiming a word that was originally meant to be derogatory and turning it into something positive (if you look at history this is how a lot of minority groups got their names, especially religiou sects.) Also some catch-all word for everything non-heterosexual was very needed because there was growing recognition of a lot of groups other than gays & lesbians: bisexuals, transgendered, intersexed, and people who didn't like belonging to a category but considered themselves a sexual minority. Thus the ever-expanding acronym GLBTQIetc. If you're interested in tactful use of the word, I'd say it's good to use the word when referring to 1) the queer community, 2) queer politics or 3) queer cultural signifiers or theory about queer culture, but not necessarily cool when referring to an individual, unless you know the person well or have heard them refer to themselves as queer.

Homo, as far as I know, still belongs solely to the realm of elementary school humor.
OP: things can sound much different when you write them than when you say them. If this were a conversation your tone of voice would have shown that you were using the word just in a joking way, but in writing it doesn't look that way to a lot of people. I'm not saying that to try to make you feel like a "bad person" but in the future just realize that people can't always tell how you mean to use a word when it's just in writing.

Oh, and I like some books too, but I think this is a more interesting conversation for a Friday 😉

Robbins is the most expensive paperweight I have ever purchased.

p.s. - Frank Netter walks on water. enough said.

I disagree.. There is no appropriate use of this word in a "joking way" any more than you can "jokingly" say something like "Man, I am such a nig ger, I just blah blah blah" Offensive inappropriate words are offensive and inappropriate. Period.

Well, I don't know about that. There was a panel of gay, bisexual, lesbian students talking to us medical students last week to educate us on issues they have faced in health care and several of them referred to themselves as queer, and mentioned the 'queer community' and it didn't offend any of them.

Or maybe you are just talking about the word 'homo'?

I was referring only to the word "homo." The word "queer" is the accepted term if used in correct academic context to refer to the LGBTQQI community (the acronym kept getting too long) and I do not object to appropriate use of this term.

My point is that there is no correct use of the term "homo" outside of taxonomy.

We are all entering a professional world (if not there already) and what you have to remember is that what is acceptable amongst your friends may not be acceptable in a professional environment. You don't know who is on SDN, and your post was using the term "homo" with an offensive connotation, meaning something out of the ordinary, or "wrong." Therefore people may and will be offended by your use of the term. You wouldn't go into a patient and say "man, i'm such a homo," so try to avoid those phrases on here too. It was completely unneccesary, and your post would have been just as effective by saying "call me crazy, but..." or something along those lines.

Well, thats good to know.

While we're on the topic of offensive names-apparently the word "spaz" can be offensive as well. http://www.24dash.com/content/news/viewNews.php?navID=7&newsID=4721 I just mention it because OP could have easily said "I'm such a spaz" - I know I say that all the time.

The point is that there are many words that are offensive to people and its hard to know them all. Everyone should just ease up on OP; he obviously didn't mean it in a derogatory manner.

But you're missing the best part of the photo! The kitten has its hands up! Hands up! Like he's in duress!

Ah, gotta love it.

I made a bet with myself that if this thread reached two pages, by the second page people would solely be discussing usage of the term "homo."

I like Robbins.

Then he probably would have gotten sh1t from Schizophrenics of America. The correct term is "differently brained."

What a bunch of anal tools! Can you imagine some of these tight asses in pesron-I can just see you tight wads in my class questioning every little policy in the school or bitching about missing 1 point on exams cause something was not fair-man get a life! You stfu. I can't believe this conversation is even happening amongst people who are/will be doctors. Using the word is one thing, not being capable of understanding that it's inappropriate, and then telling someone who is offended to shut up, is a completely different story 🙄 You people should be ashamed.

Ok, now THAT is offensive. That negative connotation is the whole reason people got upset with you in the first place! Even if you didn't mean anything by it, calling yourself a "homo" because you have favorite med books is self-deprecating, which means that you are in fact using the word in a derogatory way. I do believe you when you say you didn't think it was offensive, but now you know, it is.

People aren't anal tools if they get offended by your use of a sensitive term as a synonym for "stupid" or even "dorky." I'm not trying to attack you, just letting you know that the way you're using this word is going to piss off a lot of people.
