Here is some brief background:

Went one year to large university, didn't do very well with grades (1.6 gpa)
took a year off--went back to a different large university, and have done extremely well since then--all A's and 2 B's in three years.

Here is my problem: my cumulative gpa is currnetly 3.2 (including bad year one). However, I retook ALL courses I had that I made C or below. My gpa not counting original grades (ones retaken) is 3.67, with this semester still to add on. I know that AACOMAS uses most recently taken grades. This means that my gpa for AACOMAS will be 3.67 or greater and my AMCAS will be 3.2 or greater. I will take the MCAT this year (currently enrolled in Kaplan). I already know I need to smoke the MCAT.

Here is my question: Should I even bother to apply with AMCAS?? Does anyone think I have a chance?? I know my chances are substantially better with AACOMAS. Bottom line--I want to be a doctor.

Thanks for any help

Of course you should apply. You'll kick yourself in a few years if you don't. And allopathic schools aren't as heartless as some would have you believe... it sounds like, with good MCATs, you'd have a decent chance at many schools.

Best of luck!

APPLY!!!! Adcoms look at progress as well as the final grades. So if you bombed your first year and improved they will take that into consideration. Do well on the MCAT and get your other stuff in order and apply. One strong word of advice...research the schools you want to apply to. Good luck and don't give up!!
