with a step 1 score of 215, applying to nyc programs for Int. Med...do i stand a chance at nyu, sinai, einstein?

....and what kind of score is columbia and cornell looking for?

thanks folks.

I can only reply re: Cornell (I'm a 4th year there)--they've told us that StepI scores are not really a criteria for acceptance into the internal medicine residency. It's much more dependent on letters, interviews, etc.

thanks squeak. so i assume this means there is no screen. do you guys out there think its the same for the other schools i listed? i guess the reason i ask this is that nyu on their website said something about their being an 80% cut off and i wasn't sure if that meant 80 (as in the 2 digit score) or really 80% on the boards?

in addition i am wondering if i should even bother taking the step 2?

Yes, they mean a 2-digit score of 80 or greater. This is only a minimum. The program is highly competitive.

thanks uneosteo for the help...

does anybody have any recommendations as to what programs may be within my reach with a 215, avg preclinical, slighly above average clinicals, coming from state school in ny.

I think with a 215, you've got a shot at most programs, though there are some NY programs that use higher cutoffs. I knew a few people in my med school who were pretty much the same in regards to letters of rec, grades, etc. and the ones who had higher boards scores got interviews at Cornell, NYU, Columbia...so I don't know how accurate squeek's info is; all programs will BS you and tell you they don't have score cutoffs, but they most certainly do. I still think, though, that with a 215 you'll have a shot at most NY programs...just the Cornells and Columbias might not interview you...but you never know!

thanks for the reply DR.

its nice to get input from people out there, since our advising tell us squat about stuff like this...i pretty much thought cornell and columbia would be difficult...so thats good to know...

i am still scheduled to take step 2 in sept so that if i do well, it may help to solidify a chance at program like nyu, sinai, einstein...

thanks again for the input. good luck everyone.
