Hi,

I have graduated at UC Davis with a biochemistry degree and I have an overall GPA of 2.85. I want to raise my GPA so that I could apply to dental school. I know that most dental schools as well as masters and post-bac programs require a minimum GPA of 3.0. I haven't applied to any schools or programs yet because I don't want to waste money knowing that I have not reach the minimum GPA requirement. I was thinking of going to community college to raise my GPA. Thus, I was wondering if that is a good idea? Also, after graduating, I have accumulated my letters of recommendation and have been working at a dental clinic.

Midwestern's minimum for the one year SMP is 2.75 GPA but I am not sure if it is too late to apply. I would try and contact them.

I'm not sure CC work would prove much. I know there are some stellar CCs out there that are difficult (attendees claim so, anyway), but they're generally considered less demanding/difficult. And I don't know what you'd take since you graduated in biochemistry. You need some hard meaty classes. Science. Hardcore science. I guess check on masters. It'll take a while to raise a GPA informally. A masters gives you more of a fresh slate to prove your skills. Pricey, though.

same position as you man, id suggest go for post bac classes see how you do. If need more improvement then shell out that money for smp

Regarding taking post-bac classes, aren't the programs for admission to the post-bac mostly require a minimum GPA of 3.0.

I was actually thinking about taking courses at the UC Berkeley Extension because I actually live close by to the campus. However, I graduated at UC Davis and I was not sure if I had to be a Berkeley graduate to apply.

Berkeley Extension doesn't require you be a full time student/alum. You can just sign up and take the classes you want.

do you think that is a good idea to improve your apps or is it better to do smp route?

I think it is a good idea to improve your apps first so that you have some sort of experience to show in the work field. Once you have that, you should concentrate on academics if you really are interested in dentistry with the experience. As of now, I am trying to focus on my gpa and am hoping to go through a good route for that.
