Hello there,

I'm a Canadian citizen and I've been going to med-school in Debrecen, Hungary for more than a month and a half now. I have many reasons I am not happy with either the school nor the environment. Plus, I've heard that getting licensed in Canada for an IMG is more like a joke that anything else (I was not informed about all these rules and regulations of getting licensed and getting residencies in Canada before I left) and So basically I have been considering going back. I really do need your advise in order to make a clear decision and I must say that I'm really young as well. You may want to know that I've not been in University before either, so in the case of going back I would probably need to start again from the first year (does anyone have an idea regarding transferring your courses? is this a possibility? I am in first year medicine)
Would you rather stay in Hungary and finish your degree or you would go back to Canada and start building up your GPA and preparing for the MCAT?

I need your help brother and sisters... and I would appreciate it with my heart....

I would recommend heading back to Canada. It's not worth it. Hungary is practically like a 3rd world country.

Okay Brother,

You need to ask yourself certain things, Is it that bad that you can't stick it out there? and do you have confidence that you can keep your GPA up and pass the MCAT?

Cause if not after your years of premed you might be going right back to where you started (Hungary) or a similar country.

If you don't mind me asking, are you by any chance of hungarian origin? Coz i personally think you're quite ignorant. Hungary is no where near a 3rd world country. It's a central european country that has good quality medical education. In fact there are 2 or 3 medical schools in hungary that have also been CA certified (which FYI entitles candidates to practice in all the 50 states of the US)......so the next time you're posting a thread....it's advisable that you think twice before you write...

Well, I've been around the world, I've visited a couple of the third world countries as well, and I easily can tell you that a lot of these third world countries that I've been in are not comparable to Hungary. As far as the educational system and the California approval, maybe I should tell you that more than 10 of the Iranian medical schools are approved by the California Medical Board of Education, Iran is a third world country! The University of Tehran has a much better reputation in compare to the university of Debrecen.
All that matters in here is where do you want to live, and what are you looking for. I better be off, got a medchem exam on Tuesday. Now I like Debrecen and its people and I also like the difficulties and the pressure I'm going under in order to become a doctor. I do truly wish the best to all my future colleagues.

I think those 10 Iranian medical schools you're referring to are taught in the farsi language. The only english programs that I know of in the Middle-East are those in Israel (Tel aviv, Ben guiron etc.) I would re-check as to how many iranian medical schools that offer english programs are CA approved. For that matter, most of the european medical programs (in their own native languages) are CA approved. However, very few of them teach a 6yr. english program too and among those programs, even fewer are CA approved. (for eg. Charles First Fac, Prague; DOTE; PECS; KMU, Poland etc.)

Thanks for the reply...only two out of ten of these Iranian medical schools are taught in English... .

you're welcome and if you don't mind me asking these schools are for international students? and are they CA approved?

Sorry to say it but if you are only 18 or something (in other words, you went to Hungary straight from high school), then you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by going back to Canada or the U.S., getting a bachelor's degree, and trying to get into either a Canadian or U.S. medical school after undergrad. Why go foreign right from the get-go, especially if you are not committed mentally there? If worse comes to worse and you don't get into a north-american med school after undergrad, there are plenty of 4 year medical programs abroad (Poland, Ireland, Carribean, etc) that you can consider later on. But don't pre-maturely go the foreign route, especially if you are in it half-heartedly. You've got a LONG WAY to go.

Dude,

Definetely come back to canada.

Plus, your still very, very young.

From what I can tell after 4 years of undergrad, You may find out that medicine may not even be what your really looking for.

Especially if you plan on practicing in Canada, you may actually want to ask a physician what they think of their profession and what they think of other professions, namely dentistry.

I've heard of wayyy too many physicians in canada that don't allow their children to go into medicine, and would much more prefer them enter dentistry.

Look I'm not trying to turn this into a dentisty vs. medicine thread.

If you want to practice in canada definetely do med school in canada b/c most of the competitve residency positions are preferentially given to canadian graduates.

The last thing in the world I would want to do is end up as a family physician, or a general internist or psychiatrist.
You gotta understand that this is most likely what you'd end up as in canada, if you end up practicing in canada at all.

Don't even think about the high paying residencies such as radiology, or plastic surgery.

And in the end, just remember, that a family dentist only takes 4 years to educate, but can make ON AVERAGE 2 to 3 hunderd thousand a year (net). this is far more than family physicians, psyciatrists, and general interinsts. In my opinion if your gonna go into medicine, get into a good specialty. Before anyone starts flaming me about the $ aspect, just go talk to canadian physcians, (they seem to be very interested in talking about their low pay these days)

BTW: the only reason why I'm here is b/c my sister has really crappy grades and is considering going to poznan. I myself am in dentistry stuyding in CA.

i thought family dents make an average 120-150k in canada???

where did u get 200-300k?? maybe specialists

I loved Hungary, to visit, that is. The language is f***ing impossible. I would rather learn Czech or Polish. I am a Slav, so that's a matter of personal choice. Anyway, dude, if you're still around there somewhere in the middle of Hungary, then get your *** back here and do a proper undergrad. If you went straight from high school to medicine, then you're probably quite intelligent and deserve to have a proper Western education complete with keg parties. Education in Canada is dirt cheap, anyway.
