I'm currently shadowing a pediatrician (Dr. T). This guy is one of the nicest people I know. He does whatever he can for his patients. Sometimes, when his patients are in very bad condition, he goes out of his way to make them and their parents comfortable. For example, he bought a toy for a kid with a chronic illness a couple of weeks ago. He also does a lot of volunteering within the community(setting up blood drives, etc.).

The most amazing thing he did occurred this weekend. Unfortunately, one of his long time patients developed bone marrow cancer. The patient was transferred to a hospital in a different city. This weekend, Dr. T asked me if I wanted to tag along with him to visit his patient. He ended up driving 3 hours just to see his patient!!!! Do these types of doctors exist? I think this guy is an angel.

amazing person. I would be more inclined to ask "Do more of these types of people exist?"

A lot of the deutsche bags on this forum will flame you for being so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but I'll say that more doctors need to be like this guy. This is why I'm going into medicine.

I was shadowing a doctor once who worked in his own clinic. We enter the exam room and find an older guy there who cuts off our introduction with "STOP, before you say or do anything, will my Medicare cover this visit in full or will I have to pay the clinic out of pocket"

The doctor said there was a co-pay, the patient said "well then it looks like I'm canceling this visit before you charge me".

The doctor nodded and said "sure, sure, understandable consider the appointment canceled....... So, what's ailing you?"

I was literally stunned. The doctor took about 15 minutes of his time to talk to this guy and diagnose his problem and refer him to a specialist... and he did it for free to a patient that he didn't know.

The German bags will flame you, but there are other doctors like this. Most of them not to the same extreme, but they are almost as caring as this doctor and are equally great people.

From my shadowing experience, most doctors are just awesome. Most of them are willing to do anything they can for their patient. Every once in a while you meet a duchebag who should not be in medicine to start with.

I met a plastic surgeon who literally struts when he walks, like a high school jock walking onto a football field. I had lunch with him once and even though he had no idea who I was, he mentioned his salary and the car he drove in the first 2 minutes of the conversation.

Best part was his watch though. This thing was huge. Imagine a computer mouse wrapped around your arm in a belt. It was gold plated and the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.

He caught me looking at it and said in the most arrogant, showy way possible: "Pretty awesome huh. Yea... its got a piece of the Titanic in it"

/facepalm

I know several docs that do things like this. :) I wish more did.

Yeah, its always great to see docs out there like this.

To some extent I think it has something to do with pediatrics. One pediatrician I know works with a lot of foster/adopted kids and does stuff like starting a non-profit organization to get them school supplies every year and collecting outgrown clothes from people to give to the families.

The two allopathic med school interviews I had were both pediatricians. One was the devil, and the other was the nicest doctor I have ever met. Funny how different people can be even within one specialty.

True point, I've heard some horror stories regarding peds attendings.

I am currently shadowing a Urologist and he is also one of the nicest person/doctor I have ever met. Just makes me want to be a great doctor. Always goes out of his way for his patients.

My wife and I brought our 7 month old daughter to our doctor (the same one who delivered her and I eventually shadowed) because she had a nasty cold and had terrible wheezing in her chest. We were, at the time, without insurance and knew very well this visit would cost us a good amount. We didn't tell him that of course. He had an xray done on her chest to check for pneumonia that turned up negative. After the visit we were ready to pay and the nurse left for a second and came back saying our doctor had made our visit free. It was a huge relief and burden off our shoulders. That's the kind of doctor I want to be. Doctors (the good kind) Rock!!

I hope that I can be at least as awesome as this guy! I've meet a few spectacular docs and people myself and it only drives me more to go into medicine and be as generous and compassionate as they are.

Yes, there are, but they are getting fewer and farther between. I was pretty sick a few years ago, but being as bullheaded as I am, did not want to see the doc. My dad told my doc who then drove to my house and took me to his office (in the middle of the day on a Tuesday mind you). He checked me up for free and when he realized I could not afford my medication he again stopped what he was doing and went to the pharmacy to get it for me (which was at the bottom of the forty story building we were in). Granted, I had known the guy since I was 7, but still, it was pretty amazing and is one of the main things that got me interested in medicine.

If you are becoming a physician, hopefully you do have that strong want to help people. If you are in it for the right reasons, you truly care about people. I shadowed a pediatrician who would pay out of his pocket so a child could get a vaccination if the parents couldn't pay for it, even if they were already $1000 behind on their bill (actual example). There are many physicians out there who are amazing. Many individuals who do Doctors Without Borders are probably "amazing". These doctors make me want to be like them.
