I was sitting at my desk at work today and came up with this list

Now I'm stuck with just these four words and I'm sure the brilliant minds at SDN can help me out here.

The list is pretty self explanatory, but if you still need explanation, then maybe you can PM me and I'll explain it to you real slow-like. Now, don't you all shove each other now to reply to this message, there's enough replies for everyone.

    Unsual English Words
    1. Abbreviation – Why isn’t abbreviation abbreviated?
    2. Bombastic – Why is bombastic unnecessarily verbose?
    3. Monosyllabic – Why does monosyllabic have five syllables?
4.Palindrome – Why doesn’t palindrome read the same forward and backwards?

If you add a word, please continue with the question format. Now you all play nice, I'll be back.

It is like that, but not quite. It is a deviation. Try to keep it to words who go against their definitions by any means you can find. The funnier the better.

I just got a few more from a bunch of people here and through e-mail, I will try to update so it makes more sense. Also, as Shanster did, try to quote the last addition, remove the quotes, and just create an ongoing list.

I don't know about the 'synonym', wouln't analogue be a synonym for synonym. I put it up in case anyone disagree and decides it should be up there. I, for one, vote to take it down.

N.B abbreviation gets abbreviated to abbr. in dictionaries i believe.

i have a few more to add to the list (at the bottom, 11-26)
    1. Abbreviation – Why isn't abbreviation abbreviated? (X)
    2. Bombastic – Why is bombastic unnecessarily verbose?
    3. Monosyllabic – Why does monosyllabic have five syllables?
    4. Palindrome – Why doesn't palindrome read the same forward and backwards?
    5. Onomatopoeia - Why doesn't onomatopoeia sound like anything?
    6. Mnemonic – Why is mnemonic so hard to spell and hence so hard to remember?
    7. Dyslexic – Why is dyslexic so tricky to spell?
    8. Anagram – Why can't any other words be formed from anagram?
    9. Verb – Why is the word verb a noun?
    10. Synonym – Why are there no other word for synonym?
    11. Silent - Try saying that silently.
    12. Speechless - Again, hard to say when speechless.
    13. Hyphenated - Why isn't hyphenated hyphenated?
    14. Meaningless - Why does meaningless have a meaning?
    15. Abstract - Why is abstract's meaning so clear?
    16. Adjective - Also a noun...
    17. Adverb - ALSO a noun...
    18. Pronoun - What's so much better about a pronoun than a noun? (Why "pro"?)
    19. Exclaim - Why do you never see "exclaim!"
    20. Invisible - Strange... I can see it fine... how about you?
    21. Misspell - Actually quite hard to misspell.
    22. Unique - Or if you prefer, you can use "sole", "exclusive", "inimitable", "incomparable"...
    23. Minuscule - That's a long word...
    24. Apostrophe - Doesn't contain one apostrophe.
    25. Hippopotamonstrosesquipedaliophobia - the fear of long words, imagine a doctor telling someone they had that...
    26. Irrelevant - Why is this word used so often?

And it doesn't really count, but I find it hilarious when people say "I'm not speaking to you." They haven't thought that one through...

bombastic comes from bombast: pretentious inflated speech or writing. So, it's perfectly verbose.

Also, I believe Shaggy transformed its verboseness in his song "Boombastic", because it rhymes with "spastic" and "fantastic", yet retains its pretentious roots.
