Each year the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) offers assessment examinations throughout the world to help ophthalmologists evaluate their knowledge in the basic science and clinical sciences related to ophthalmology.

As you can see this is my first post as i am new here, first i will introduce myself, my name is Mohamed samir and i am from Egypt, i am in my final year as in Egypt we study medecine in 6 years, so i was planning what to do after i finish and because i want to be an ophthalmologist, i start searching in this area, so i found the ICO assesment examination, and when i found this board i was very happy because it helps alot, so i was wondering is there any doctors here who have passed such examinations and can help me with some explanations???, i hope so

Dear Mohamed,

Welcome to the forum. I hope someone here is more familiar with the ICO because I have no clue about it. I am certain, however, that US physicians don't take the exam if they only practice in the U.S. We take a voluntary exam from the American Board of Ophthalmology that certifies our knowledge for 10 years.

I suggest you try searching on the American Academy of Ophthalmology (http://www.aao.org/) website for information about the ICO.

Good luck to you.

Thanks Dr. Andrew for your reply, and yes USA doctors dont need this exam, but in Egypt i got to have the ECFMG / USMLE Certification to be able to work as a doctor in USA, so i prefer to start preparing for just ophthalmology, because as you know in USMLE I will study all the medical subjects again, and this could be done in Europe i think, also i am thinking to try the Central Application Service (CAS) for Ophthalmology Residency after i finish, what do you think about this?? also i hope you can explane this process as it is new to me

Information about the CAS and the process is found here: http://www.sfmatch.org/

As a foreign applicant, you will not have any chance without prior experience in the U.S. with ophthalmologists. It is crucial for you to find some experience here and secure letters from U.S. ophthalmologists.

Good luck!
