If VSAS doesn't open up tomorrow...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got rejected for 1 location today and they didn't cite COVID. It seemed like they actually did review my application and selected someone else.

I think tomorrow is looking good. I just wonder how many places will suddenly disappear on the site (and hold my application money).

Doesn’t really matter because out of everyone I applied to on VSAS, 1 rejected me before the shutdown and the others have on their websites they’re not accepting any visiting students this year.
Same. I'm SOL on any of my spots. Hoping my school just lets me hang out for several months with the same preceptors at our home(-ish) hospital

It's pretty disheartening to keep crossing programs off my list that I really wanted to go to. I have one that hasn't cancelled or responded yet.

My concern is chances to match (where I want to) as a super average DO applicant who's better in person. I was banking on 3 specific ones but now who knows

I put this in the MD student forum as well... but now that VSAS is up, if you are having trouble finding away rotations and if your school allows you to do a rotation in Critical Care Medicine (IM), we have plenty of open spots at Advent Health in Orlando.

You can find our program and rotation on VSAS by searching for the rotation code 7857-2

Ugh... as an update the day before VSAS opens for you all... our GME office is closing the institution to students outside of Florida and is conditionally looking at schools in hotspot zones.

If any of you all hear from your admin about not being allowed to do virtual rotations, please let us know. I'm hearing from people at my school that it might actually be COCA that's not allowing virtual rotations to count towards grad requirements. If so, COCA would have to budge on that. No way you can accommodate all rotations without some of them being virtual, I'd think.

That would be amazing if it turns out to be true. But admin a lot of times just blames COCA for anything and everything that they don’t want to do. But it’d be hilarious and very 2020 of COCA to not allow virtual rotations yet also not have places for us to rotate while MDs who have home programs can sit at home lol.

So what have you been doing for the past 8+ weeks that you haven’t been on rotations if virtual rotations aren’t allowed?

My school is literally creating in-house virtual rotations for us at the requests of students.

Our school came up with virtual rotations for us for the past two months. But they won't allow us to complete virtual rotations from other institutions for our fourth year because they're "not approved" by our adminstration.

That would be ideal. The problem for us is there's just not enough rotation spots in our state for us. Plus, our school has pretty intense 4th year requirements (8 weeks of FM, has to be rural, 8 weeks of surg subs, 4 weeks of peds etc etc), and they are not budging on these requirements in order for us to graduate.

Almost all fourth years move out of state for the last year and now that's in limbo, but the school can't physically accommodate us back in our state. It's a mess. They won't bail on these requirements, won't let us do virtual rotations through other institutions, but also can't promise us we get all our rotations in our school's state/region.

Wow that's insane that they have that many required clerkships for y'all in 4th year. One of the main reasons I picked my school was the lack of required 4th year selectives and the ability to go on 5-6 auditions...oh wait :arghh:

Yeah, it's crazy. It's hard to even rationalize with admin about this because it's not like we can say look at these other schools changing their requirements because of a once in a lifetime pandemic! Because those schools don't even have such strict requirements in the first place.

The only requirements we have this coming year are an EM rotation and 3 Sub-I's. People have been trying to get them to amend that policy to 2, but they're definitely not changing it. I'm a fan of them keeping those as requirements since it gives us a very legit reason for doing 3 auditions. If you can find them that is.

Our school told us COCA is only putting down their foot regarding virtual rotations in core rotations. They have to at least have 2 weeks of an in person component. As far as we've been told elective rotations and non-core rotations can be done virtually and still meet COCA standards.

Thanks. My follow-up would be, who determines what a "core" rotation is? Is it school-specific? If so, you'd think the school could change that policy on the fly given the circumstances. If our school has 5 different core rotations for fourth year, then yeah I can see why COCA is saying to the school, "you can't do virtual rotations for those".

Who defines core? COCA? I have an OMM rotation 3rd year. Most schools don't so clearly that isn't a COCA requirement.

That's what I'm wondering. I think the school decides what is a core rotation for them. For us, we had a core EM rotation during third year. Not many schools had that from what I've heard.

We had half my class doing our core surgery, IM, and FM completely virtual with no plans to make it up in person. One of those rotations has to be a core according to COCA.

Same. No word on this from our school at all. I believe Grey and don't believe my school as far as I can throw them but this seems like something they would have told us. It would be incredibly egregious not to and it's to the point it makes me confused lol.

I'm just repeating what we were told so it could be wrong. The person who is functionally our dean serves on the COCA board so I just believed it at face value

Our school just informed us that virtual rotations won't count for grad requirements. Unreal.

Well our director of clinical education refused to even answer that question today when someone asked via email after the mention the VSAS email today... her response was to “focus on securing rotations for August 1” ??????? Like that’s why we’re asking. *sigh*

"But we want you to cold call places and we aren't helping you get any rotations because FU."

I mean, I guess the site isn't crashing this way.
Over under 1.5 hours in the waiting room? With literally every med student in the country on there at the same time.

This waiting room doesn't even have 7 year old automotive and golf magazines! IT better be worth it once we finally get past the bouncer

What's stopping students from just sitting on VSAS indefinitely for the whole day today? They put a max capacity so the site doesn't crash, great. But if there's no limit on how long you can be on the site, then this is a faulty set up.

I swear, the people making decisions are so bad at this. What a nightmare. Every aspect of this year is an absolute disaster.

Oh that's my plan. Thank god for extra monitors. Just gonna have VSAS on the other one all day while I do normal stuff until I get into this exclusive club

No I mean, like, once you're in the program and are able to search and apply. People are waiting for you to log out, but what's stopping you from staying logged in and continuing to search and apply all day. There's a max capacity for users to be in the site, but there isn't a max time limit for users to be in the site.

yeah true. Just keep applying and leave the computer logged in with the site pulled up. Honestly it can't be THAT difficult to figure this stuff out no clue why leadership is slow to the punch

I got 2 apps off to the same institution before getting kicked off. Probably just calling it quits and hoping 1 of those dates works out

I got kicked off too, Ill just email programs outside VSAS. This is ridiculous.

I got kicked off after 1.5 hours of the waiting rooM. I never even got in. Now pending again on 2 different devices. My friend who logged in at 9:08 just text me she got into VSAS....
Then she also text me to ask if we could screenshot our score reports. So this is what we’re waiting on, people who aren’t even ready and don’t know what to do once they’re in.

Apparently it kicks you off after 30 minutes. I didn't know this so didn't get an app off, but did manage to scope a few places that were added.

Yeah, you definitely want to know what you're doing once you get in. I was afraid of people just lollygagging and browsing rotations when it opened back up. In a way, it's good they're kicking people out of the program after a certain time. So people aren't in there for the whole day. But you getting timed out before even making it in is ridiculous

let's not entirely put the blame on vsas folks. The real issue is individuals who remain logged on for hours without turning on their ethical conscience (I've been on the queue for the past 3 hours now......unable to run essential errands). We could all be using vsas if people just spent the time to prepare their documents ahead of time and uploading them and completing their task by applying to their respective programs. Sometimes I feel like I'm in high school all over again (but this is actually worse)......

They kick you off automatically, don't worry. There are programs on there that are new and programs changing start dates that messed up some of my plans so I had some ambivalence while deciding.

It’s my anniversary and I’m ignoring my husband to cycle through VSAS line and prometric availability,

Yeah I ended up getting in, got 1 application off, and was trying to read the descriptions of the virtual rotations when I was kicked off.

Huh, friend is stayed logged in for an hour. How did he managed that?

I think the site is starting to allow that. Might be because of decreased traffic overall in the afternoon? Just a thought though. I've been logged in for more than 30 minutes this go around, second time in the site today.

Yeah, looks like it. I just finished my second round and it's an hour.
