And you've been rejected, will they usually give you a response like "the committee is still working on your app", or "the decision is in the mail".

The second would seem to be particularly devastating.

Not that I've received any such notifications; just wondering.

I think it's usually the second one. At least that's the case for my rejection letter from Georgetown.
 
georgetown will not release admissions decisions of any sort over the phone... so whether you've been accepted, rejected or waitlisted, you won't see it until the decision arrives in the mail
