If someone matches in ophtho while in their prelim intern year, what do they do with the extra year? For example, if an intern this year matches in ophtho in january, you won't start ophtho until july 2005. However you will be done with the prelim year requirement in june 2004. What can you do from july 2004-june 2005? Does anyone know of anyone who has faced this situation? Thanks.

I know someone who is doing that this year. I think that she is thinking that she'll do some temp work/ moonlighting stuff for the year. I don't have any specifics on how to work that out though...

One option is to moonlight during that year. You'd probably make more money that way. Try and take Step 3 early during internship and apply for a full medical license right away because it can take a long time to get the full license.
