I find this pretty shocking. 1) That the incident happened and 2) that there was no jail time involved. This was not malpractice, this was battery.

There are problems with the US health care and tort system, but nothing compared to this . . .

Yes, that physician should have gotten jail time and lost his license at a minimum.

Needless to say, that's absolutely f..ing horrible. I envy the guys attitude though. I'd be brooding on how to get back at the doc that did that.

Well, the doctor does have to pay a fine equal to 20 years worth of salary. That'd be like getting hit with a 10 million dollar judgement here while simultaneously losing your ability to practice medicine.

Hope he's a better lecturer than urologist.

1) Since when did we need to start comparing the U.S. to Romania to feel better about ourselves?

2) Anyone here heard of Lorena Bobbitt?

3) Frustrated doctors live in the U.S., too. There was a doc in Manhattan a few years ago that decided to carve his initials onto a woman's belly after her C-section. Granted, the only thing lost was dignity, but crazy nonetheless.

I'm not sure if we're thinking about the same case but it sounds familiar. The case I'm thinking of is during a lap-hysterectomy the surgeon cauterized "UK" into the uterus prior to removing it. The procedure was recorded and the patient whined that she had been "Branded like a steer" during the procedure and sued. The court eventually threw the case out because the guy went to Kentucky for medical school and used UK for orientation for pathology once the uterus was removed.

Huh? The total damages were 120,000 pounds which is about $235,000 USD.

A fair deal less than 20 years worth of salary, even in the UK! The award is nothing. In cases like this with clear battery, you wish the US was in jurisdiction.

The story was printed in a UK newspaper but the incident happened in Bucharest, Romania and the surgeon was Romanian. The paper quoted that Romanian doctors make no more than 500 pounds per month. But yeah, I definitely agree with you, this doctor should have gotten way more than a fine! I'm thinking a decade in a Romanian prison might teach him how to shrink his enormous ego and how not to lose his temper so easily...
