for a while, how are you guys getting recs? I'm in the process of calling schools to see if they will take letters from supervisors, etc. All of my former professors have moved on and are unreachable.

dr1day,

Yes, this seems to be a common nontrad problem; e.g.,

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=231925

It is also mentioned in the nontrad faq. An answer, due to Q, is given as follows:

If you are a graduate or post-bac student, ask your current professors to write LORs. If you have been working full-time with no classes for several years, you may be allowed to substitute employment letters. However, some schools may require refresher coursework and letters from those professors. Other potential sources of LORs for non-trads include volunteer coordinators, physicians whom you have shadowed, or researchers for whom you have volunteered. Contact the individual schools for more information about appropriate sources of LORs.

Another helpful hint: The advice I was told was: get your LORs even when you don't need them, and file them away in a college letter service. Then when you need an updated LOR, you can use your original LOR to "jog" the memory of your professors on who you were and what you did. And if they are not available or have died, you can possible use the old LORs.
