The Governor of Illinois signed into law the following act
Medical School Matriculant Criminal History Records Check Act

Here is the URL to read the actual language of the bill.

    http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/fulltext.asp?Name=094-0709

The American Association of Medical Colleges also endorsed criminal background checks for medical school applicants, here is the URL

If any of you were wondering whether background checks will be performed, it is most likely that all schools will do one. And it is a certainty that every school in Illinois will perform one unless the law is challenged.

Hmm interestingly, it says that the background check MUST be performed, but it also says that if you have a conviction, the conviction does not preclude matriculation, and that the ultimate decision is left up to the school. I wonder how much this is going to end up costing us? It says that the school may charge us, but doesn't say how much. Grr...
