This is a popular residency but whenever i ask anyone what do these guys do, they just say "its a general physician"....and that they do everything....anyone know anything else about INTERNAL MEDICINE and what they do, where do they work and how well are they comphensated? can they work in a hospital? if so what do they do actually? Also its a primary care residency right?

The reason it's such a popular residency is because if you want to go into one of the IM subspecialties (e.g. cardio, GI, heme, onc, nephrology, rheum, etc.), then you have to do an IM residency before you do a fellowship. It is possible to just be a general internist, in which case you deal with general adult medicine, which is considered primary care. Many residencies give you a choice between concentrating on primary care or in categorical IM (for those who want to go and do a fellowship). As for salary, IM specialists are generally better compensated than general internists.
