I am a South African-trained qualified general surgeon, currently in an HPB fellowship. I'm looking to work in Ireland and I'm trying to negotiate the labyrinth of regulations, trying to figure out the best route. I would appreciate any input from someone in a similar position who has been through this before.
From my contact with locum agencies it seems I need to work as a registrar for a period before applying for specialist registration. In my context, registrar positions are long-term until one finishes training so I find it unusual that one could work in a 'locum' registrar position for only a short period and then move on. Is this normal for Ireland?
Is this the usual route that IMG specialists take to eventually gain a consultant position?
