Hey guys, quick question. I did a search for it but didn't come up with much.

Do you guys know of any EM residencies that take IMG's or FMG's? I have an Indian guy who is spending time at USF's new EM residency and he keeps asking me about IMG/FMG friendly EM residencies. The only two I know of are:

Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philly
Akron General Medical Center, OH

I say that because I think I remember an FMG or two on their roster list. Can anyone add to this list? It might help future posters as well as this guy that is following me around... Thanks.

I know from the interview trail that many of the Detroit programs are very friendly (and full of) U.S. carrib grads. I don't know if these guys are FMGs in the strictest sense but I'm sure these programs would be worth him checking into. Specifically Detroit Receiving, St. Johns, and Siani Grace.

Ed is right, and you can add Metropolitan, Beth Israel, Methodist, St. Luke's-Roosevelt, the Brooklyn Hospital and Maimonides in NYC, and SUNY-Syracuse. Programs have become kind of schizophrenic with the popularity of EM, though, so, as times tighten up, FMG's are eased out (notwithstanding program directors at Beth Israel and UNC-Chapel Hill being FMG's (although Rob Vissers at CH is Canadian born, bred, and educated)). Newark-Beth Israel used to have A LOT of FMG's, but they went whole hog on the UMDNJ wagon this year.

Easier, though, is to say who ISN'T FMG-friendly....Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, the midwest in general, Texas, and (of course) Cali - although Highland did take an FMG this year.

Also add University of Mississippi to the list of IMG friendly as their residency director started at a foreign medical school.

I believe that University of Connecticut will also interview a bunch of IMGs.

Akron I believe has only had one (from Ireland I believe).

Louisiville I believe took one this year.

As for those that are not IMG friendly....York in PA........was rejected based on my common application form (had not downloaded letters of Rec, board scores, transcripts, etc. and got rejected). Also, St. Lukes in PA essentially told me that they would probably never take an IMG (and that was when I just asked to observe for a day).

Many of the programs in NYC typically have a bunch of IMGs. Also, as someone has already stated, the Detroit programs (Detroit Receiving, Sinai-Grace, St. Johns, and Henry Ford) typically will look at you for your potential to be an emergency physician rather than based on where you went to school.

However, with all this being said, I think that being a US born, IMG is much easier than being a foreign born IMG...especailly if it comes to visa issues.

I posted a list earlier of IMG-friendly residencies, with most of them concentrated around NYC and MI. The best thing is to go the websites of the Carribean med schools and look at there match lists particularly, SGU. It is definitely possible and easier to match as an FMG than most FMGs think. I think most SGU people averaged 8 interviews. but in any case, here's a few friendly residencies where SGU people interviewed at in the past year

Sinai Grace
Detroit Receiving
St. John's
Saginaw
Sparrow Hospital
Grand Rapids
Albert Einstein (PA)
Beth Israel (NY)
Metropolitan
Brooklyn
Maimonides
NY Methodist
SUNY Brooklyn
North Shore
NY Presbyterian
Geisinger
U of Mississippi
U of Arkansas
USF
U of Maryland
Wright State
York
LSU Charity
Wash U
Lincoln
St. Luke's Roosevelt
ECU
Allegheny
West Virginia

by the way, Quinn, where are your fellow EM residents from?

SGU-
Thanks for the list... that's a huge help. I feel really bad for the IMG that is hanging out in the ED... he seems pretty desperate (having done a 4 year IM program in India) to do EM... so that list will be a big help for him.

My fellow colleagues are from:
1) LSU, did IM/Peds residency, now in EM residency
2) Ohio University, did a DO internship in FL
3) Ohio State University, did a military internship and worked for a few years as a flight surgeon
4) Indiana University - Straight outta school
5) Nova Southeastern Univ - Straight outta school
6) University of Miamia - Straight outta school

I think I interviewed at USF with 1, and possibly 4. I think #5 is the shifty one in the group. But that's just me.

You can add LAC/USC and Highland to the list from St. George's, and me, the scrambler to Duke.

Hey it's 2018...Does anyone have an insight on how well USIMGs fair? It seems we make up just 5% of all the residents that get matched...

2018 Match Results by State, Specialty, and Applicant Type

If you go through that document, you will be able to find out the states that matched USIMGs last year.

EMRA Match

Then visit this resource and find out the EM residencies in those states. Go to their website, and look at the "our residents" page - you will be able to track down the places that matched USIMGs last year - all 80 of them. Good luck!
