US-IMG vs. FMG........

did you match?

was the scramble sufficient?

i matched to a PGY2 in PM&R, but had to scramble for a TY

anyone else going to Maryland General Hospital?

Congrats Doctim 🙂... scrambled for a TY... pretty impressive.

US-IMG here... matched at my #4... LSU-Shreveport Rads... I'm ecstatic and have had priapism for 36 hours now.

Congrats, both of you. Cuts, go for a run or something; runners have better six packs, anyway, he he.

This is an interesting topic. There's gotta be more than 2 international students in this year's match that frequent this forum. Fess up now, everyone.

What exactly signifies a USIMG vs. a non-USIMG, by the way? Is it based on citizenship, permanent residency or the kind of school you go to? I realize that it's an obvious distinction for most students but there's gotta be some borderliners.

Later.

what does TY stand for? thanks

Congrats Dr. Cuts on achieving your radiology residency as a graduate of St. Eustatius!

TY = transitional year

USIMG = US citizen/permanent resident graduate of a foreign med school

non-USIMG = non-citizen grad of foreign med school

Thanks, but I was thinking more about the borderline cases.

Pakistani American goes to a Pakistani medical school (to which it would be very hard for non-Pakistanis to get in). Is he a USIMG? What if he never applied to a US school? What if he stays in Pakistan? Still a USIMG?

Danish medical student marries American and they decide to move to America. Thus, he becomes a permanent resident. (This is me, by the way.......) Surely I'm not a USIMG but by your definition I would be.

Which is better, anyway? Is there an official distinction? Has anyone ever heard a program director use this distinction?

I'm a "borderline" case (grew up in US but moved to Italy at age 14) and just recently went through the match process for IM, so maybe I can answer BK's question. Being a permanent resident is always a plus because the program doesn't have to worry about immigration issues and excess paperwork. It is actually a screening criteria for some. For most programs, it's just one variable in the equation (it will put you ahead of others with similar credentials). The fact that you've never applied to US med schools might actually be a plus if you're an IMG (I've had more than one PD tell me that along the trail). That's because it's assumed that USIMGs go abroad usually because they weren't able to land a spot in a US med school, although that obviously isn't always the case.
