I really want to live in NYC, and I'm feeling like going to medical school is going to prevent me from being able to do this. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to match into a residency there considering I'm attending a not-so-competetive state med school in the south. But post-residency, is there any possibility that a doctor can land a job in NYC with basically no connections??? Or should I give up the dream?

Are you joking? NYC is IMG central. I am very sure you will be able to match in NYC if that is your only criteria.

If not, you can always do a residency elsewhere and move back to NYC. You may not have connections but I'm pretty sure NYC could always use another doctor or two.

There are HUNDREDS of programs in NYC for residency. Sure, Columbia/NYU may be ultra competitive, but there are lots of programs. What are you interested in? And as long as you have a NY state license, you can practice there.
