  1. Resident [Any Field]
in any resideny, not just FM? I know they have more responsibility, but does it really make a difference unless you are going for fellowship? I know lots of people who get fellowships, and never were chief.

I have worked at 2 fp residencies. in general folks take the slot for
1. SLIGHTLY HIGHER SALARY AS A RESIDENT( FEW THOUSAND EXTRA/YR)
2. LOOKS GOOD IF YOU WANT TO GO INTO FACULTY/ADMIN WORK
3. GOOD FOR FELLOWSHIP APP.
4. MIGHT HELP GET A COMPETITIVE JOB

Residents who have served as Chief are generally assumed to possess certain desirable leadership and organizational skills, and to be well thought of by their faculty and peers. In short, being Chief looks good on one's C.V. It should be noted, however, that not everyone who acts as Chief Resident is actually good at it. 😉

i agree with what everyone has said. what IS rare, however, is what i noticed when i ddi an away rotation in new orleans a couple years ago: the chief residents were paid more like attendings - mine, in neurology, was banking $125K...i was shokced. what a great 'dea' - chief rez for your resume, respect, environment you're used to, and moolah!

this is very rare though.

It's common in internal medicine programs for the Chief year to be an additional year following completion of residency training, which means that you are an attending at that point. I'm not aware of any FP programs doing this, but it's certainly possible.
