Willing to bet my life if Congress signed a law that mandated increased payouts to PCP's such that PCP's were now earning 500K minimum that FM competitiveness would go through the roof overnight. All of a sudden PD's that would take multiple failures candidates would start taking only 250's Step 1 minimum and start grandstanding about "how hard their specialty is." smhReimbursement increased significantly and lagging not too far behind was competitiveness of the specialty. Nearly two decades of highly qualified residents followed the reimbursement increase.
geography is a much greater concern than money.Willing to bet my life if Congress signed a law that mandated increased payouts to PCP's such that PCP's were now earning 500K minimum that FM competitiveness would go through the roof overnight. Lets Face it Money is at the root of all EVIL, even the incorruptible, wholesome practice of Medicine

Majority of radoncs I trained with would take 250k job in nyc/SoCal over 500k job in kansas. Not quite....
Neurosurgery makes a ton of money, but you don't see that being overly competitive (although they are very smart and hardworking).
Rural FM makes 500k.
Geography and lifestyle also matter a lot.
Academics would love to turn this portray oversupply as 1) problem with greedy radoncs wanting high salaries or 2) geographic maldistribution.Majority of radoncs I trained with would take 250k job in nyc/SoCal over 500k job in kansas.
