Can someone tell me about the in service exam? I know it will be in October, but how long of a test is it, what is the format (MCQ's, I assume?) and what should I study...for PGY1 IM...do they vary depending on what year of residency you are in, or does every level of training get the same test? I appreciate any feedback.

multiple choice in a boards like format.
two sessions, am/pm
i forget the # of questions but it is a lot. sort of like taking boards in 1 day instead of 2
everyone takes the same test
your results will include some comparison with those at the same level of training and a breakdown of strength and weakness areas

what to study? who knows? everyone studies differently. i tried to be organized and not study for this test since you only have so much time to prepare for the real boards. 1st year and 6 months of 2nd year i used harrisons. after that mksap and medstudy.
many people successfully used
mksap and/or medstudy only. depends on what your personal goals are.

they are boards prep material.
mksap-medical knowledge self assessment program
it's a text format and has like 13 books and tons of questions

medstudy-outline format and recently i understand they have improved the questions but historically the questions were inferior to mksap.

if you know either of these you will do fine.

ask around, someone will have them so you can take a peek.
i am sure they can be found online as well.
