I spent ten years as an artist before going post-bacc, and my CV gives the details (grants and awards, exhibitions, reviews, and so on). It also reveals that much of my art is on a medical theme.

I'm planning to include the CV when I send in my secondary applications, but I'm not sure how adcomms will react: Is it common to enclose supplemental materials with secondary apps? And since the CV describes a career only peripherally related to medicine, would including it just be confusing?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I would check with each school you are applying to if they want to see your CV. Some schools ask for it specifically others tell you right away that they don't want it. Many secondaries have space for you to right in what you have been doing, if that space is not enough call the schools and ask if you can send in your full CV.

I would not worry all that much about how your former career will be only peripheral to medicine, after all the admissions committee are looking for people who can show commitment and 10 years as a professional artist would demonstrate just that. (But do make sure that your application demonstrate your desire to be a physician, not an artist).

I included my CV with every application I sent in because I have kind of a long a confusing work history that a CV makes infinitely clearer. There were one or two school that specifically said that they did not want a single piece of paper from me aside from their secondary, and for those schools I simply included my CV with an update letter after my file was complete and under review.
Good luck!

Excellent advice. Thank you both.
