So I'm in a lab, and I did it for credit this semester. I ended up with a B+, which was a bit surprising/dismaying because there's no grade breakdown and I'm not sure where I went wrong. I'm regretting that I took it for granted, because I just operated under the assumption that if I just went to lab and did my work, it would be an A.

Question is, how do I ask the reason for my grade in way that isn't awkward, or will make me sound like I'm complaining?

Hey, ____________ thank you for supervising my independent study credit(s) last semester. I was wondering if I could get a breakdown of how I was graded/assessed, so that I could improve in future semesters.

I too would ask about it directly. "I noticed I earned a B+ and would like to know how to improve in order to earn an A."
