How much time have people generally dedicated to this? (I'm in the neurobio field, if that helps.)

I've been work-studying in the lab for 2 years and am tired of doing work for other's projects when I could do the same things and get an intellectual kick + credit out of it.

But I would like to know people's experience since I'm loading up on orgo2, molec neurobio, russian language, and russian lit

Thanks in advance!! :D

I think it depends a lot on your PI and how much you want to get done. I'm taking 4 credits of research and putting in 20+ hours per week, but the *suggested* amount for that many credits is ~12 hrs/week (3 hours/credit). Ultimately, if you are conducting independent research, it comes down to how much YOU want to accomplish, and this will dictate how much time you devote to it.

Do you have to write a research paper or something? Or do you literally get credits just for studying?
