For those of you with a secondary from Indiana University, what sort of reference are you using for this? A friend? Boss? Professor?

I used a teacher/coach from middle school that I keep in touch with. Was going to use a grad student or post doc in my lab, but I have only known them for 1year and it says to get somebody that has known you for years(2+?). Basically I think it can be anyone not family that can show that your an ok person outside of the classroom. I would avoid profs, since they would fall under the standard recommedations.
