Hi all,

"Long time listener, first time caller"

I am currently applying to medical school, hoping to specialize in hematology/oncology and conduct bone marrow transplants in the future. I know that many students will complete a BMT fellowship after their hematology/oncology fellowship, but do your roles and responsibilities change after becoming a BMT specialist or does the additional fellowship add to them?

I am curious if BMT specialists are still treating physicians with their own clinics or if the majority of their time is now dedicated to BMTs (preoperative evaluation, surgery, etc). Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Since I am not in medical school yet, my decision to pursue this career is not set in stone.

You do realize that bone marrow transplants are not surgical interventions, right?

As far as your question, if you train at an academic center you don’t necessarily need to do a bmt fellowship. And if you do become a bmt specialist than you will have your own clinic and treat patients inpatient (ie transplant them, take care of them with post transplant complications) and see them in clinic pre and post transplant.

Okay, great thank you for the information! So I am assuming from your comment that BMT training may be completed during the heme/onc fellowship training of some academic centers. Let me know if I understood that correctly.

Also, I inadvertently wrote surgery when I more so meant the procedure. My apologies.

No worries; bmt training is apart of hem/onc fellowship but only at hospitals that have large transplant programs will the training be sufficient for practice. Even then, some still elect to do a bmt fellowship. It’s not like ep in cardiology where you have to do The additional training. Some programs will prepare you enough (although many won’t and you will need a bmt yr to get a job)

Okay, makes sense! Thanks for taking the time out to answer my questions.
