Just wondering if you've given thought to what specialty you'll choose?

I know I'd like to do work abroad - both short-term volunteer stuff and longer-term...I haven't done too much research yet but it seems like primary care areas (peds, ob/gyn, fp) and EM are probably most common.

If you're interested in working abroad, what kind of work do you think you'll do?

Thanks for your thoughts!

"Abroad" is a rather vague term. There's certainly a difference in the kind work you could do in say Haiti and that which you could do in say Canada.

i always thought so too, but i've been hearing that now days, they need more specialists who would teach the native doctors..all the native specialists have left their country to come to America or England,...so there is a huge need for specialists..but...i was also told..to do something that you like to do..do not pick residency based on what other countries may need out htere..because frankly..they need everything...even super duper specialists...

I AM interested in Internal Medicine. I really like the relationship an internist develops with the patient. and the mental challenge of determining a diagnosis from such a broad range of possibilities.

It's kind of weird. Talking with people at interviews, whenever they ask what field you want to go into, and you say, "Internal medicine," people usually laugh. I'm not sure why. Maybe because everyone else is choosing surgery or super duper specialties. Anybody else experience this?

Point taken. I was thinking more in developing countries.
