Ok guys (and gals), longtime listener, first time caller. I'm an upcoming D3 looking (ideally but not necessarily) for a 6 yr oral surgery program in the Southeast/Texas (family near there). There seems to be fewer and fewer people posting to the match post each year, so the sample size I've been able to find in the forums for this information is very small. Am I competitive for any of these programs?

NBDE 1: 90
Class Rank: about 18th percentile
Extracurriculars: A couple of pretty good things but nothing outstanding
Undergrad: 3.9 in aerospace engineering, 20 DAT
Externships: I plan to do at least 4 with two being 2 weeks or longer

What do you think? Should I open my search a bit more to four year programs (I may be interested in a fellowship afterwards which is why I am leaning 6 yr).

Thanks for your help.

You know if you are a good applicant or not, just be realistic and honest about it. Are you the best applicant ever? No. But are you good? Clearly...you have a 90 on the boards, top 20%, and if you follow through on the externships, you'll have a good number of them to show you know what you are getting into. It doesn't matter what we think, you should apply and find out, but I would say you are definitely going to get interviews and it will be those that determine if and where you match.

I was mostly worried about my class rank. Many schools require top 10% and my rank will probably decrease to just below top 20% when grades come out for last semester. At this point as long as clinics go well, I doubt I'll see much up and down from here on out. Basically I wanted to see how competitive lower top quartile was for 6 yr programs.

OS program will also weigh in which school you attend. Some schools' top 10% is like other schools' top 50%. OS programs have a history of taking residents from particular schools, because they know their background and what to expect from their graduates.

Thanks for the help, I'm going to keep doing my best in class (although clinic grades next year are kinda a crapshoot as far as that is concerned) and work on what I can, Externships.
