Hi🙂

I am in a very complex situation, I did not know where to post this but I figured that at 22 I am a pretty non-traditional applicant, considering the fact that I've never been to college.

I am interested in studying medecine and long-term goal would be to work on the field with international organizations during crisis situations (war/famine etc) It has been my dream for a long time but personnal problems and responmsabilities have kept me from that dream.

I would like to study in the UK, I do not have a college degree. Please tell me where would be a good place to start. What do I do and how long will it take me?

thanks

I know that Columbia University's formal Post Bac pre-med program has a linkage agreement with one, or maybe two, Medical Schools in Ireland or England, let's say Great Britain.

At least, it was this way when I was there a few years ago. Of course you'd have to be a Post-Bac which means you need that Bachelor's in the first place. So, I'd say think about this program, cost depending, location depending, etc.

There might be other Med Schools in GB that link up to US post-bac or undergrad programs, start by contact Columbia and also other schools.

You are still very young by all counts and you can indeed do this! A little homework goes a long way. Or, I suppose you can do an undergrad degree from the get go in the UK. Be cautious though as "Undergraduate" means different things in the US and abroad. UG means 4 year primary college degree here in the US, overseas it actually means the Medical Degree itself.

If you are interested in Intl programs, Ben Gurion in Israel has a wonderful international program and it is also affiliated with Columbia University, in this case P&S (the med school.) I also feel as if one of the schools in Louisiana has an International schemed MD program.

Remember, you can always get the MD in the US and make a career goal the type of medicine you are talking about. The great thing about the MD is that it's recognized in lots of places. Look at Doctor's Without Borders as well...after you get your MD. Or NOW, for volunteer experience.

Good luck

Hey Hey,

We need some more information:

Are you from the US or the UK? What is your educational background?

Why the UK? Is there anywhere in particular in the UK you'd like? What about Ireland?

There are two routes to medical education in the UK:

Graduate entry - after finishing a science related bachelor's degree you can apply and enter a 4 year medical education program.

Direct entry - you'll need to attend college in the UK to complete (and do well in) a handful of A-levels (high school courses & exams). From here you'll do a 5 or 6 year medical education program.

More information here:

Also, if you are NOT from the UK funding might be a pretty big issue.

Answer my questions and I'll try to answer more specifically to your situation.

Thanks for replying you two🙂

I am a European Union citizen (italian)but I have been living in the Us since I was 12, before that I lived in the West Indies. My educational background is shady and that's why I really don't know what frist steps I should take. I have a High School Diploma from Haiti ( In the West Indies) (for the last four years I have been traveling back and forth) and I have never been to college after that. I don't think that I'll be able to go to college now, maybe in two years, so I guess my journey will start in about two years. The reason why I am interested in the Uk is because I don't speak Italian but I want to be in Europe so I guess any english speaking country in europe might do🙂

If I earn a nursing degree in the US, will it help with admissions maybe>?
