Thought those of you who visit this forum would like to know that we have a good thread going on in the "Osteopathic Students" section of the forums. We're looking for others who are interested in UHS or better yet, have decided to join the class of 2006.

We're getting to know each other, asking questions, and even getting answers and advice from current UHS students. Please come and post a message.

Hello future UHSers,

I too will be apart of UHS's Class of 2006.

I am orginally from Southeastern Michigan and did my undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Michigan.

I am hoping this forum will introduce me to some of my future classmates too.

Michael--
So you went to the U of M eh? I am a huge Wolverines fan!! I have never been to Michigan but I have always liked them. What did you do your undergrad in?
Looking forward to meeting all of you this fall!!

Chris

I guess I'll join this conversation. My name is Tom. I grew up near Philadelphia. I majored in Preprofessional Studies at Notre Dame and I graduated in 1999. I've spent the last 1 3/4 years working as a medical officer in the army. I've been waiting for the better part of three years to start med school and I can't wait to begin (and leave the state of Georgia forever!) :D

Chris,

I my undergrad major was in Environmental Sciences and graduate major is in Toxicology. I just hope I can get my thesis written before class start at UHS.

Honestly, I am not too hot on the Wolverines. I grew up in an Irish Catholic family so I have been a ND fan my whole life (old habits die hard). At least I'll have Tom to watch ND football games with.

:p

HI I too will be a part of UHS class of 2006. I will be getting a B.S. in Biology in May from Central Methodist College in Fayette, MO. I look forward to meeting all of you. Also if anyone has any info on good apartments I would love to hear about that.

I would like to say good luck to all of you! I am graduating from UHS in just a few months and found out yesterday that I matched to Wright State University for Emergency Medicine yesterday!
You all are starting a great career and though no school is perfect...UHS will create the oppotunities for success!

Good luck and study well.

Freedom--
I am going to be a first year at UHS and I am very interested in Emergency Medicine. Do you have any tips or advice for me? Would greatly appreciate it

Chris :D

I sent you a private message.

Congratulations on your match!!! That's great. I am sure there were alot of mixed emotions with match day yesterday!
I am from Virginia, went to Univ. of Virginia, got a bachelors in Chemistry nearly 10 years ago! I didn't even know that osteopathic medicine existed until I asked a well respected family practice doc if I could shadow him. I love the DO philosophy and can't wait to start at UHS in August!
I really love the geographic diversity I am seeing on this tread! Where is everyone else coming from?

I am coming from western/central Kansas. Undergrad at Fort Hays Statr Univ. in Athletic training. Father of four.
Can't wait till August

Chris

Hi everyone...sorry I didn't get back on here sooner. I always just visit the Osteopathic student site. I'm glad you all found my thread and joined in.

I go to Central Missouri State University currently. I will be graduating in May with a Biology degree. I'm from Olathe, KS. I'll be living at home with my parents the first year to save money.

I'm so excited to keep corresponding with all of you throughout the next few months. Let's try to keep this going.

So, here's a question: What kind of activities do you all like to do for fun? during your spare time?

I am into bodybuilding and weightlifting, playing basketball, football, etc. I also like to read about medicine (obviously), and play with my kids. I also enjoy mountain biking, although we don't have many places to do it in my neck of the woods

Chris

Hello everyone,
I too will be attending UHS this fall. I am from Montgomery, AL and I graduated from The University of Alabama last May with a degree in Biology. I am a huge UA football fan. Too bad we couldn't have worked out our contract with Notre Dame, I really liked playing you guys. I have been doing cardiovascular research at UAB since I graduated. It is great to meet some of my future classmates. I was wondering what everyone is interested in going into specialty wise. I know most of us will change a hundred times before we actually apply for residencies, but I thought it would be cool to see what everyone was thinking on day one. I want to go into(I think) orthopedic surgery.

Now that we're down to listing hobbies, I guess I will chime in. My favorite activity in the whole world is skiing, even though the weather in my present locale makes that impossible. :( I also like to hike through mountain trails, (again, impossible where I live right now! ), to travel -in Europe especially- , jogging, and playing the piano . I used to be a huge football fan, but the lack of action from my favorite teams over the past several years has rather dulled me on the sport.

I notice many posts from states like MO and KS. Since I've only made two short trips to KC in my entire life, can someone who knows the city tell me about the night life?

I know I mention this seemingly every 3rd post, but I'll try again. Is anyone (besides me!) considering Bennington Ridge over Century Towers  ?

-Tom

I have been accepted at both UHS and DMU. Which one should I go to? Anyone else accepted interview on the 8th?

HI Everyone-
It's good to see new additions to our growing class. It seems the topic of hobbies has come up. Personally I enjoy sports (playing or watching), reading, watching movies, and just hanging out with friends. I'm completely excited that there will be intramural sports especially soccer. Is anyone else planning on playing?

As for the question of nightlife in the city there is a huge variety. There are concerts of all types, plays, clubs, stadium seating cinema complexes, professional sports, great museums, and parks. KC is a city of wide variety which is nice.

The Bennington Ridge question from Tom I believe. I am not planning on living there b/c a friend of mine who will be a second year was really dissatisfied with it. He along with others have strongly discouraged me from living there.

Well I hope everyone is having an exciting fun filled weekend.

-Ronda

To all of you who have been accepted to UHS, congratulations - and to those of you who are awaiting results or interviews, good luck.

I'm about to finish up my first year at UHS - so far so good! If any of you have any questions about med school in general, UHS in particular, nightlife, etc., don't hesitate to e-mail me at [email protected].

I am from Oxford, MS originally so be prepared for the Southern point of view if you ask me any subjective questions.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!

It sounds like I might be the only one who still would prefer to live at Bennington Ridge. Oh well, I relent.

Next, is anyone interested or already have reserved one of the large rooms at Century Towers and is looking for a roomate?

-Tom

Hi everyone,
I too will be joining you at UHS in the fall. I am a native Mississippian and I graduated in 2000 from Mississippi University for Women in Microbiology. For the past 2 years I have been doing neurobiological research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. I am looking forward to meeting all of you in the fall!!

Hey all! Just thought I'd introduce myself to y'all. For starters, I'm from western Kansas, Garden City to be exact. I go to undergrad at Colorado Christian University in Denver.

I, too, am curious about where everyone's thinking about living. I'm probably going to head up to KC in May or June to look for apts. It sounds like a lot of people are looking at Century Towers and Bennington Ridge.

Is anyone as excited as I am to be starting medical school? Just think, in just about 4 short years, we're going to have the term "Dr." in front of our name. That is so hard to believe. Our dreams are coming true everyone! Congratulations to all! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you soon. It'll be nice to put the (user)name to your faces.

Just curious how many of you are still in college to be graduating this spring. I go to Central Missouri State University presently. I'm so excited for graduation, but it seems like there is just so much to do in my classes right now. Is anyone sick of doing this work now that you know what is to come?

Also--what is everyone planning on doing during the summer. I unfortunately have to take biochemistry to fulfill the requirement. Of course, I'll be working to try to make some money. I work as a pharmacy technician.

I'm hoping to get some relaxation in this summer too though. Does anyone get to take the whole summer off?

I'm posting this in the osteopathic student forum also. Sorry for the repeat.

I am adding to the hobbies & living thread:
I love snowboarding, but don't plan on doing alot while a student ($$$$). I will be bringing my IN-line skates if there are any other roller bladers out there. I am also a former figure skater and ice skating coach, so if anyone saw that outdoor rink in the Crown center, look for me on it! Anyone who wants to learn let me know, I love to teach!
As for housing, I am looking for a small inexpensive house in a good school district. Someone mentioned Independence, MO. Does anyone know how long it takes to drive to UHS from there? I heard that MO public schools aren't so hot and to live on the KS side.
The plaza area looked really nice, too, but expensive I'm sure!
I'm thinking of going out in mid-April to search.

Hey class of '06! Glad to see a good thread going here! I have to agree that having that 'Dr.' in front of my name will sure be nice! I'm sure you all have worked just as hard to get here. To add to the list of 'where are we from, what are our hobbies'... I am from Cape Cod, MA & am currently finishing my Master's in Medical Sciences at Boston University Medical School. I am excited about moving to the Midwest and enjoy running, biking, playing rugby, singing, hanging out, and count me in for soccer, too. I wish everyone well in all their endeavors until August! See you there!

~Hillary

Eurodoc,
I might not be the most qualified person to answer this, but it took me about 10-15 minutes to drive to Independence from UHS. Of course, this was not during rush hour.

Hi everyone-

It's so interesting to see what everyone's hobbies and interests are. Hillary, it's good to see another soccer player will be around.

For the question about driving time from UHS to Independence it's about 15 min with little traffic and 30 to 45 min with lots plus there are several ways to get there (hwy or city streets) both being about the same without a lot of traffic.

My question to everyone is why did you want to become a dr. to begin with?

Take Care
Ronda

I think I was born wanting to be a doctor! In undergrad I was really turned off by the medical profession and went into nutrition, which turned into being a "stay at home mom" and taking care of all the sick and elderly members of the family along with the babies!
Last year I couldn't supress my longing to be a doctor anymore, and I started volunteering in a clinic. I met a DO there who allowed me to shadow him and I learned sssoooo much!
After getting my spouse and family's blessing, I took the MCAT, applied, and the rest is history. I just feel like it was fate that I was introduced to osteopathic medicine and to UHS at the time I was. Here's what I mean, I was in Europe, in a primary care clinic, and the only doctor who I felt I really wanted to shadow turned out to be a DO, then my Aunt from KC came to visit us in France, and when I mentioned UHS she started telling me how the school was just in the KC media and winning awards in the area.
I am very happy with my decision to go to UHS. I hope everyone else feels the same way.
I think I am going to cry at the white coat ceremony!

Hello everyone and congrats on your acceptance to UHS. I am a first year student (almost 2nd year) and would be glad to help or answer questions. Emai- [email protected] I will reply with my phone number if you need anything drop a line.
Later,
JT

Hey J.T.,
What's happening? It must feel good to be almost finished with your first year. I can't wait to get started. See you this fall.

To members of the first or second year class...

I am graduating from UHS on June 2nd, that week prior to graduation is called profoundly enough "graduation week" and it requires us to be around KC and UHS for the last week in May.
To make a long story short, do you happen to know what your class schedule is, so that I may sit in on a path lecture once again?

I interview next week and was looking for some advice, my sister is a second year at UHS and loves it, so I know a good bit about the school, but she doesn't remember much about her interview because she had three in one week when she interviewed.

Freeeedom,
We will be out of school at that time. Our last days are MS-I 17th and MS-II 13th. However, I was hoping to meet up with you so you can give me some insight as I begin my third year.
