Boarded surgeons are really the only small animal vets I know of that regularly have on-call hours. Pretty much every speciality hospital will have a surgeon on-call 24 hours a day.

Maybe at private practices...most referral hospitals have on-call surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, internal medicine, everything - plus technicians and assistants/students. Heck, I'm on call right now over Christmas - and I'm in pathology (and yes, ha, there is indeed such a thing as emergency necropsy....weird things happen)! Most (nay, all that I know of) hospitals have someone in every specialty on call at any given time 24/7.
