Hi. If you come across an interesting case on one of your rotations, how do you ask if you can write a case report? do u ask the resident, the attending, the student preceptor? (without stepping on toes...)

pls delete thread, wrong forum. (unless u have ideas???)

Hmm, well it certainly won't hurt to ask the resident or attending who was on the case. I'll be honest and say many times, the resident will want to write up the case themselves, and often there are multiple people from different teams (Medicine, Infectious Disease, Heme-Onc) who all want to write up the same case. But if you ask them about it, maybe they will let you help out and give you some of the credit.

Depends on the institution. I've had good luck asking the attending that was most involved with the case.

Start by asking the primary attending. If the patient was on a Surgery service, and you were on ID consults for instance, the case technically "belongs" to Surgery. More often than not, they'll say "go ahead" and may then ask you to work with the residents on their service. You may need to include people (residents, fellows, attendings) on the consult service as well.

Honestly, it's not usually a big deal, unless you don't ask first, then it can get ugly.
