FM lets you work with kids and Obstetrics. IM leaves the door open for subspecializing into cards, GI, etc. FM is usually more community based.

I've heard that unless you want to do pediatrics and/or OB/GYN, it's probably a good idea to do IM over FM because you can do outpatient stuff as IM too, but also have more flexibility in terms of future options?

But if you're not a very competitive applicant (and would likely only match community IM/FM), is there much of a difference because you'd likely not be competitive for fellowships?
