Hello! I am an international medical student studying at a US DO medical school. My fiancé is a US citizen and we are planning to get married next year. Would I need the actual green card in my hand at the time of application to bypass the visa requirements?

Here's the answer:

DO NOT GET MARRIED UNTIL YOU TALK TO AN IMMIGRATION LAWYER

I cannot stress how easy it is to screw this up. Seems like you just get married and all of your visa problems go away. Nothing could be further from the truth.

You will get an EAD before your get your GC, and that should be enough for most programs. Some might insist on an actual GC, but that should be a small minority.
