just discovered this blog so i figure i'll be adding my stats n getting some counsel.

gpa 2.8 (pretty poor yes)
gre 640V 720Q 4.5AW

applied to too many schools i think

acceptances: Tulane (mch mph), Minnesota (mch mph), Emory (GH, Infectious dx. mph)
awaiting: JHSPH, Havard, TSPH.

currently at a loss on which school i will finally go to. main factors involved will be availability of funds from scholarship, but since i'm an international student i'm not sure how available that would be as i haven't received any offers so far.
plus i will need a place where it will be fairly easy to get in a residency program soon after completion.

need some advice.
thanks people

I applied for PhD Epi Program at the UT. Untill now I didn't receive their official acceptance, so I don't know if they give me any offer.
Besides, I have been accepted from UPitts, Tulane, Emory. I'm waiting for any funding from these schools in order to decide which school I will join in :)

Congrats to all those whose got good news about admission to MPH thru SOPHAS.

I have also applied thru sophas and have not heard about my admission status yet. Only the school that I applied for asked me to fill in the secondary application...what does that mean? Are they looking into my application ?
Waiting is killing me....very anxious now....

Please anyone of you reply with the proper admission procedures....I think many of you have the same experience....

Over 5 schools that I applied through SOPHAS, only UT Houston required a supplemental application and post their decision on SOPHAS. Hope it help.

Epiepi,

Thanks for your response. Any idea, how long does it take for the admission committe to post the decisison on Sophas?

BTW...can you list the schools that you have applied for if you don't mind.

For all the international students out there, I have a question:
how much do you all think that a school name matter?
For example, if you plan to go back to your home country after your MPH, do you think it is important that they know what school you graduated from?
Also do you all want to work in the US after your MPH or you plan on going back to your home country?

The school reputation means so much outside the academic world in China. As far as prestigious schools are concerned, most Chinese people know little more than the Ivy League. When you present "Ivy" to others, people instantly recognise it as one of the best universities in United States. However, in the academic world, school reputation is not that important. Though there's a sense of awe when you mention an Ivy, we also look for other qualifications, say, papers, impact factors, etc.
I didn't plan to stay in the US forever, but I'd like to gain some work experience before I go back to China.:)I'm not 100% sure right now. I know it's hard to find a job for an international student.

got accepted to University of Minnesota yesterday ...yay !!! :soexcited:

We got accepted to the same schools!
About the scholarships at JHSPH, you do not need a separate application. They consider you for scholarships when you submit your application. I would suggest calling them to see if you have been nominated for a scholarship. For international students, there doesn't seem to be any other sources of funding except scholarships (within the school and maybe outside of the school is also an option). Sucks :-(
Could you please share why you chose John Hopkins over any other schools? I am interested in your perspective/opinion as an international student (since I am one too). We may be classmates since I am leaning toward JHU :)

Thanks for your reply ^^
The main reason I chose JHSPH is the strong recommendations from my college classmates (current JHSPH DrPH students) and visiting staffs (JHSPH alumni) of the hospital department which I work in. They both mentioned the comprehensive academic training and outstanding faculty of JHSPH. Besides, the ranking is also another important factor. Harvard and Johns Hopkins are both my priorities. And God has already made the decision for me.
