Hey, anyone know if any American medschools take Canadian students?

From what I've seen, every school so far says "must have American citizenship".

Thanks!

This is probably true at all public schools. You should look into private schools.

Get hold of an MSAR and read away to find schools that do accept foreign students.

And an MSAR is?

Sorry, I never have any idea what half the accronyms people use on this site mean!

MSAR stands for Medical School Admissions Requirements. Its a book published by AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges). It has all (ok, maybe not all) the information that you might need about each medical college.

FYI, you don't need to me a US citizen to attend a US med school, even a public one. You just need to be a resident. I'm from France and I made it....

Good luck.

Interesting to know. This is what it says at "http://www.mayo.edu/mms/md-prerequisites.html" (just as an example):

"United States citizenship or permanent resident status is required for admission to Mayo Medical School."

So did you apply for permanent resident status before you applied? Or did the school help you with this after you got in?

I will check out that MSAR book I guess. I have a feeling that applying to American medical schools will be a lot tougher then other countries but I feel like if I don't even look at American schools I'd be doing myself a disservice.

Thanks for the advice! I think I can still get a Canadian loan (with a co-signer) if I go to school in America so I'm not too worried about that.

This is a REALLY stupid question but is there an easy way to tell which schools are public and which are private? I was just planning on applying to private US schools.

I got my green card before I applied. What djipopo says makes sense. I think the MSAR tells you if a school is private or public.

Good luck.

Hey there. I am a Candian and I do not have US permanent residence. I pretty much applied to only schools that accept Canadians. The schools policies are mostly stated in the MSAR or you can call schools. I also applied to some state schools and got interviews there. It really depends on the school, for example, UVA and EVMS take Canadians but UMD and U Miami don't. It is possible! Good luck.
