Ok - since I'm not in medschool yet, I'm still a little fuzzy on all of this. I know about residencies, but where do internships and fellowships fit in the mix? Do only certain subspecialties require them? Exactly what is the difference between and intership and fellowship? When do you have to do them? Ok- basically, educate my ignert self. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Internship is simply the first year of residency (regardless of the field). In some circles it is seen as a slightly derogatory term (ie, my BF constantly is trying to get me to call myself the R-1 for Resident Year 1 rather than intern).

Fellowships are generally completed after finishing residency. Not all fields require them but many medical specialties do as well as some advanced surgical training. They can range from 1-3+ years depending on the field.

Hope this helps.
