Does anyone have any good info about interventional radiology and invasive cardiology? Specifically, I'd like to know where to get a little more info on them and what the differences are. Also, what's the residency like and after? I basically heard a talk from an interventional radiologist and it sounded pretty interesting so I was curious if there was a good source out there to dole out some advice.

I am wondering about interventional radiology too -- especially neuro. Specifically, what does it take to get into such a residency. Must one have research and publications in med school? Or are good board scores and rotation evaluations enough?

(I am sure this has been addressed in the past, but without the beloved search function, I can't find it! )

Thanks in advance to anyone who can guide us!

interventional radiology= 1 year internship + 4 years diagnostic radiology + 1 year interventional radiology fellowship

neurointerventional radiology= 1 year internship + 4 years diagnostic radiology + 1 year diagnostic neuroradiology + 2 years neurointerventional fellowship or you can do a neurosurgery residency and then do the fellowship

Interventional radiology fellowships are wide open and very easy to get. Many positions did not fill in the last subspecialty match. Neuroir is competitive.

As far as the criteria for selection, probably recommendations from residency faculty. As you progress in your training there are fewer objective measures. What you did last is the most important. Your board scores will not be considered as long as you passed.

Here are some links to sites that can give you some info about both interventional radiology and neuroradiology. I am considering both of these field as well. From a distance they look to both be absolutely fascinating.

thanks for the replies. what's the difference in terms of practice for interventional radiology and invasive cardiology? isn't there quite a bit of overlap there?
