interview at USC: hotel, transportation info?

I'm interviewing at USC next week, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend an affordable hotel nearby. Also, it'll be my first time in LA, so I have no clue how I'm going to get from LAX to the hotel, and then from the hotel to USC. Does anyone have any advice? Is there a good public transit system? Are the cabs worth taking?

There is a Radison hotel on Figueroa, just across the street from USC (gate 3).
