I have an interview (more specifically, was asked to "come in to talk about it") at a research institution for a research tech / research assistant position for this year.

I was wondering whether I should go straight suit and tie, or maybe just pants and a shirt, or some more casual combination such as suit w/o tie? After all, I'll probably be touring the labs and such.

The general rule for job interviews is to dress one step above the normal working outfit at the place of employment, not to exceed a suit, though. So, if they wear khakis and knit shirts, you want dress slacks and a button-down, maybe a tie. If they wear jeans and Ts, you want khakis and polo. Etc.
