Hey guys, I have 2 questions about interview attire:

1) For a suit w/ 3 buttons on the coat, should all 3 buttons be buttoned? I heard something about only buttoning 1 or 2 of them, but think this is kinda weird...

2) Girls: Any advice on how to wear hair? I was planning on wearing it down (this is the style I like best on myself), but I have pretty long hair and my sister recommended I pull it half back (she heard something about this in an interview class). Does it really matter either way?

Thanks all! 😀

Are you male or female? Men only button the top button on a suit coat. Unbutton it to sit. Females do incomprehensible female stuff, so who knows?

LOL. Female. Thought that was obvious by my name "Lizanne," the mention of long hair, etc... but I guess anything is possible these days... 😉

Hmm... anyone know if females also only button the top coat of a suit?

For my 3 button suit, I was taught to leave the bottom button undone (this goes for pretty much everything with several buttons, I think). I've left my hair down on a few interviews, and have definitely seen lots of other girls do it too. In fact, at the one interview where I had my hair up, I was the only girl who'd done that. I'd say go how you feel most confident.

Good luck!

Well, you started your post with "Hey, guys" which can often be gender neutral, but when you follow with one bullet with no audience specified and one that is addressed to "girls:" then it makes me wonder.

Yeah, I always learned that you button them all except the bottom. So, top on a 2-button, top 2 on a 3-button, top 3 on a 4-button...you get the idea. Who knows why? Freedom of movement? And as MoosePilot says, unbutton to sit down.

Hmm... guess I can see that... I figured rules would be the same for male and female suit attire so the first bullet was directed at both genders. 🙂

I would tend to say that you should wear your hair up if it's pretty long for two reasons. One, it does look neater and more professional, and there's plenty of ways to do it where it still looks cute. Two, it takes away the urge to fidget with it. I've always been a fidgeter, and that's a major reason I wore my hair up. But if you're sure this won't be a problem for you, go ahead and wear it down. . .just make sure your hair is neat and pulled back from your face. 🙂

I always assume that female rules are going to be different most of the time. They're only the same enough to prohibit developing a rule that they're always different. Buttons on different sides, belts on different sides... it's all weird. Women are the only keepers of women's dress rules.

But the men's rule is as mentioned.

hmm, I always thought a female would button all buttons on the suit. But then again, I have a very non-traditional suit so I don't have to worry about that.

As far as hair, however you're most comfortable. I've seen everything from very long (butt-length) hair all down to nice hair-up hairstyles at interviews, and I really don't think it matters much. Just wear it however you think you look best, and how you will feel most comfortable and confident.

I worried a lot about attire for my first interview. After that I sort of realized it's not nearly as important as I was making it out to be. For my last interview I forgot my earrings, which I originally thought were pretty important, and didn't even care when I realized. The most important thing in interviews is to be confident and to be yourself. If you do that, and you're dressed normally, it seems to me like it doesn't really matter what exactly you wear.

good luck :luck:
