alright girls.

i'm in austin. have an interview. went to a million places to buy a suit. the ones that came in sets, the pants were way to huge. i know business pants are suppose to be loose but they were all baggy on me. i have a pair of black pants that fit me but i can't find a jacket to go with it.

i'm looking for just a conservative, black suit. any suggestions on where i can get professional clothes that would fit???

i'm usually a size 0 sometimes smaller depending on the store. and i'm short. i have tried the limited, express, anne taylor, nordstroms, etc but they all seem to be too big or aimed at older women. did i mention that shopping in austin is awful?

really need help! thank youu!

Try Banana Republic, Robinson's May or places that specialize in petite sizes. Then you can have everything altered. That is what I had to do.

I got a petite suit from Macy's, they usually have petite stuff there. I'm not sure if they have one in Austin. By the way I hope shopping doesn't suck too bad there cuz I'm planning to move there some day. ;)

When my daughter interviewed last year for medical school, I made an appointment with a personal shopper at my local department store (it was Macy's here, but I think they all have them). This woman asked for some info over the phone: what kind/type of garment, what the occasion it was for, my daughter's measurements, height, shoe size. When we showed up for the appt, she had 12 skirt suits, 6 pant suits, extra blouses/sweaters that coordinated with some of the suits and shoes. This service did not cost anymore than the price of the garments and they even honored the "deals" at the time (you know...15% off regular priced item). The items were all appropriate and fit properly and better yet - neither one of us had to go find them all (they were from different departments). The alterations could be done there, but I'm not sure if that cost is similar to what private alterations would be. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Hi! They're having a career suiting sale on lizclaiborne.com. They have stuff in petites too. I bought a navy blue blazer and pants both slightly fitted and both petite. I'm 5'2'' and didn't need any alterations whatsoever.

You can always try JCrew. They have wonderful suits and individual pieces. Better yet, they are currently having a big sale! Good luck!

I know what you mean!
I bought a pant size 2 and a jacket size 4 at nordstrom.
I love it!
I had to have the pants lenghen. (Don't forget the shoes that you will use, is critical to get the alteration done right. It must lie halfway between the floor and the top of the heel, that line where the heel meets the shoe)

Banana has great suits also! Stay away from the old lady stuff! Casual Corner can get kinda old lady.

ok another question. my interivew is about 8 hours long.

would it be professional to bring a small black purse? are we even allowed to bring purses? is there an alternative?

i'm also bringing a portfolio with like paper and a pen.

I borrowed the cutest black Gucci purse from my best friend and I borrowed a black leather folder with paper to write on from another friend. Most women had purses, some had both folders and purses. They both came in handy for me. :)

If you need to bring a purse by all means go ahead. I personally can't leave home without my phone, some money, and lip gloss! I don't think it is looked down upon at all. Just keep your silver sparkly J.Lo bag at home.:)

You have a few options:
Borrow a suit and accessories from friends who wear the same size as you.
Try outlets...you can get a designer suit for around $200 at an outlet store.
Check some thrift stores. I went thrifting with my friend one time, and she found a nearly-new Ann Taylor suit in her size! It will probably be a stretch, but you could try it. Just make sure to get it dry cleaned before you wear it out!
This is a bit tacky...but you can always charge it, tuck the tags in and return it once you've finished your interviews ;)
If you are seriously hard-up, ask family members/friends/employers for a small loan/advance for the purpose of getting an interviewing outfit.

Try landsend.com - They have a lot of very nice business wear, and they carry petites down to size 2. They will also hem pants for you for free to whatever inseam you want (to the 1/2 inch). I have found their shipping to be very speedy as well, even if you just use the regular shipping.

I think a new suit is a good investment, even if you are a little low on cash. Interviews are your time to impress and look your best. Besides, I'm sure there will be other circumstances in your professional career when you will need to wear a suit.
