So i figured i'd start a thread on useful items that we should purchase before we go on interviews. Feel free to contribute with links to actual items or just textual suggestions.

Clothing/Attire:
Suit
MW is having a really sick summer clearance event- great time to grab a suit from here.

http://www.menswearhouse.com/mens-c...e=2013_06_17-_-Global_Promo-_-SummerClearance

Indochino offers custom cut suits (more expensive than pre-cut) but are worth the money if you want to look extra fresh.

http://indochino.com/collection/The-Essentials
I'm a pretty big fan of the J.Crew factory Thompson suits and I'll probably pick one up before next spring. J.Crew factory has 30-40% sales often and you can stack on a 15% student ID discount, so if you wait, you can probably snag one for under $250. Here's a good review on it at Dappered (http://dappered.com/2011/08/in-person-the-j-crew-factory-suit/), it seems like one of the rare suits that fits pretty slim off-the-rack and would only need minimal tailoring. I'd stay away from Men's Wearhouse or Jos. A. Bank if you're somewhat slim or athletic, because most of their suits fit boxier and looser. Try to get something in a navy or grey as it will be a lot more versatile and you'll find way more uses for it later on.

Fragrance (GENTS):
This is a really cheap, nice fragrance you can bring with you and not have to worry about losing.

http://www.amazon.com/Adidas-Energy...1377042903&sr=8-1&keywords=addidas+fragrances
Yves Saint Laurent's La Nuit de L'Homme is a pretty solid cologne that is fairly affordable for a nice fragrance (~$50) and has almost universally acclaimed reviews (http://www.amazon.com/Yves-Saint-Laurent-Lhomme-Toilette/dp/B0021MLVA8). If you're looking to drop some serious money on a fragrance, Creed's Aventus is a great choice (http://www.amazon.com/Creed-Aventus...&qid=1377188524&sr=1-1&keywords=creed+aventus). If you're new to buying fragrances, you should definitely try them on in a store or order sample vials first since a huge part of finding a good cologne is making sure that it meshes well with your natural scent.

Collar Stays
Amazon has a great deal on stainless steel collar stays now. $5.95 plus free shipping for 36 stays. You can get all 36 at 2.5" (standard length). Or you can get assorted lengths.

Shoes
Allen Edmonds Strands are almost universally recommended as a first pair of nice dress shoes. They're pricey ($345 list), but you can get them for a little under $200 when the right deal comes along and they'll last a lifetime. If they ever get too beat up, you can just send them in to Allen Edmonds and pay a fraction of the price for a new pair to get them re-crafted and like new again. You can also surf eBay and check out local thrift stores, usually you can find some really high end dress shoes selling for under $50. I really like the walnut color for the Allen Edmonds, but any brown dress shoe should work well.

Watch
I found this guide on the watches sub-reddit and i think its pretty good. Should help you find a good watch that fits your budget.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/wiki/buyingguide
As far as watches go, you're gonna want a dress watch to wear with a suit. James Bond can get away with wearing a stainless banded dive watch with a tuxedo, but as a rule, you should get a dress style watch with a leather band that somewhat matches your belt and shoe color. If you're going to invest in a watch, I strongly recommend that you get an automatic mechanical watch rather than a quartz. Most quartz movements are largely the same between a $20 Timex and a $1500 Omega (I love automatic Omegas though), what really sets apart higher end watches are the automatic movements that they house. I really like the Orient Bambino as a budget option, it's listed at $260 but you can usually get it under $200 if you wait (http://orientwatchusa.com/collections/mens-watches/classic/er24005w). Orient usually has some 30-40% coupon floating around, and they have a fantastic in-house Japanese movement for the price. If you want to raise your budget to around $500, you have a couple of nice Swiss choices. I like the Tissot Le-Locle (http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T-Clas...id=1377190001&sr=1-1&keywords=tissot+le+locle), Hamilton Jazzmaster (http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Jazz...377190024&sr=1-1&keywords=hamilton+jazzmaster), and the Tissot Visodate (http://www.amazon.com/Tissot-Visoda...id=1377189983&sr=1-1&keywords=tissot+visodate) in this price range. All three have rock-solid ETA Swiss movements (ETA also produces the movements used in much higher-end watches made by Omega and IWC).
I'm jealous of you actually. Watches are a very expensive hobby (one that I really don't have the money for as a student). I do rock this $10 digital watch a lot when I'm dressed down or going for a run (http://www.amazon.com/Casio-F91W-1-Classic-Resin-Digital/dp/B000GAWSDG), I love the retro look of it.

Do what makes you happy. As long as you look presentable, small details like how tailored your suit is or what you have on your wrist won't get you into med school and it certainly won't keep you out of it. Good luck on your interviews, you're gonna ace them :D

Storage
Travel Suitcase/Garment Bags
This is the one that I bought for interviews. It was larger than the duffel bag that is linked earlier, but it was cheaper when I bought it last year ($30). Plus, it has individual pockets for stuff that you can access without having to take apart the bag.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P8JBPC/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Bought this as a carry on for my suit.

http://www.amazon.com/Travelers-Cho...1377117872&sr=8-1&keywords=siena+garment+case

Using it for the first time this weekend.

I travel a fair amount, and having a nice carry-on suitcase that fits in the bins of most planes is a huge convenience. I really like the suitcases that have the spinner wheels since it makes dragging them across the airport a whole lot easier. Two of the ones I would recommend are this Samsonite (my dad actually travels with this, he flies nearly 200,000 miles a year and it's held up quite well) (http://www.amazon.com/Samsonite-Lug...-Suitcase/dp/B006QO3SIU/ref=brand_ltst_clth_i) and the Travelpro Crew, which I see recommended a ton (http://www.amazon.com/Travelpro-Lug...qid=1377190910&sr=1-3&keywords=travelpro+crew). If you want something a little smaller, I've heard really good things about Everlane's duffel bags (https://www.everlane.com/collections/weekender-shop-mens), they look pretty sharp and should hold everything that you would need for a short trip. I've read positive reviews on this Samsonite rolling garment bag too (http://www.amazon.com/Samsonite-Lug...sr=1-1&keywords=samsonite+rolling+garment+bag), so that's another option that would probably work well.

Electric Shaver (GENTS)
I bought this Braun earlier this summer and as a guy who grows facial hair EXTREMELY quickly, this gives me such a close shave that my 5-o'clock shadow is much less noticeable now.

Plane Tickets

I use both these websites to search for tickets. I think they work well.

http://skyscanner.com
https://www.google.com/flights/
Lastly, I try to fly Delta usually since I have their lowest-tier frequent flier elite status, which nets me free checked luggage, priority seating, boarding, and security, and sometimes free upgrades (although not as frequently as I would like). If you haven't started banking frequent flier miles on a particular airline yet, you should definitely sign up for a program since you will be netting a fair amount of miles on your interviews. It only takes around 25,000 for a round-trip ticket in the US on most major airlines, and you'll surpass that before you know it. I have flown Southwest in the past too, and a lot of my friends really seem to prefer it, so if you don't have any reason to fly a larger airline, they're a pretty solid choice. Their frequent flyer rewards program seems fairly easy to earn through too, a few of my friends have already gotten close to free tickets just from flying to and from school.

1. Suit
-menswearhouse.com has some pretty decent fall sales going on right now.
-If you want a custom cut suit, chino.com/collection/The-Essentials this collection seems very well made.

2. Travel Suitcase

White cotton/linen handkerchief; tie bar; brass collar stays.

Also this doesn't this thread already exist kind of?

Can a mod lock this? Both men's and women's editions of this already exist.

GTLO?

There's a clothing thread, but nothing for everything else that comes in handy.

Forget the travel suitcase. Take a suitbag as your carry-on and a backpack as your personal item. Since even MSTP interviews are only 2-3 days long, you'll only need a couple changes of casual clothes, the usual hygienic items, a pair of dress shoes, and maybe a laptop. You can fit all of that in a backpack, or if you have a fancy suitbag you might be able to get most of that in there instead to free up the backpack for whatever else you feel the need to bring.

I had a suitbag last year and would not recommend it. It did not fit in the overhead area of the plane most of the time because it was too big, and in general it was just a pain in the butt to lug around. I noticed most of the businessmen just had normal rolly suitcases, so I think I would've used one of them if I could do things over. To top it off, the suit was still wrinkled even with a suitbag.

Carry an iron then? Or how can one deal with this

The most convenient way to get out minor wrinkles is to hang the suit in the bathroom (carefully...) while you take a hot shower. The steam in the room will help with minor wrinkles.

This is what I did. Most of the time, the airplane will have a special area for you to place things like suits. It's usually in the front of the plane right where you enter. I would have all my suit stuff in there (including my dress shoes) and the casual clothes and toiletries in my bag. Perfect way to avoid checked baggage fees.

Did you have any trouble with this size of bag as a carry on or personal item for flights? I just got mine in the mail and am concerned its too big for some airlines.

Also, has anyone had troubles finding an area to hang your suit so it doesn't wrinkle on flights? Or would it be safe to say that I can find somewhere to hang mine on every flight?

It fit in every overhead bin when I went on my interviews.

I was worried when I got it too, but it is thin and can fit above other people's stuff.

I mentioned earlier that there is usually an area where they place suits/jackets and whatnot on the plane that is separate from where you sit with your carry-on. It might be airline specific, but I remember the same area being there on the airlines I took.

I've heard Southwest does not always have a closet available for hanging your stuff.

Do you guys think watches are a necessity for a suit?

Not a necessity; personally I feel naked without one. It's kind of up to you. However, definitely go watchless before you wear something cheap/ugly. Nobody will really judge/question you for not wearing one, but if you wear something gaudy or weird, it will stand out negatively.

Do you guys think watches are a necessity for a suit?

No, but that may be because I am younger. I have a cell phone that I check for time and that is becoming more acceptable. However, if it is an older person that see this, they may see me pulling out a cell phone to be odd and I might come off as bored.

Watches are not a necessity in a fashion sense. However, in a practical sense, you will want a way to discretely check the time without pulling out your phone. So you probably want to get one.

Watches are an important part of looking professional. Plus, every physician i've ever shadowed wears one constantly

+1. Rolexes are so overplayed.

OP, if you are starting out on a decent watch, check out Hamiltons/Tissot watches. Theyre good starter watches.

I picked up the Hamilton viewmatic and one of my interviewer noticed because he likes watches.

And I agree with whoever said that pretty much every doctor wears one. I've seen doctors usually wear high end leather watches and a few wear stainless ones (rolexes/breitlings/omegas)

I personally like leather because the stainless ones are never a perfect fit and they jiggle everywhere.

The person doesn't have to be old to find it odd for an interviewee to whip out a phone to check the time. I would find it pretty unprofessional to take out your phone during a tour, presentation, student lunch, or especially during an interview. Those things comprise pretty much your entire interview day, so unless there's down time at some point, the phone should be completely put away.

Those Rolex watches are not appropriate for an interview. Would you wear your bathing suit or khakis and a polo to an interview? Of course not, you dress up and wear a suit. So if you are going to wear a watch, please wear a dress watch. Small, thin, simple, few (or zero) functions outside of telling time, something resembling precious metal for the case (stainless is fine, we are students), strap is leather and matches shoes/belt.

Breaking watch laws is probably not going to affect your interview, but you'll still be doing it wrong.

What does you guys think of this watch?

I personally think this is one of best looking watches I've ever seen.

Wow this ended up being a lot longer than I expected. I ended up getting somewhat carried away since I happen to be fairly into men's fashion and travel. Hopefully this will end up helping some of you, I'll be in the same boat in a few months and I'll probably come back to my post since it actually helped myself quite a bit to go ahead and write down what I would need.

One more thing. These are just my own personal thoughts on what I will be doing to get ready for my interviews, if you're not obsessed with menswear you probably think I'm a little crazy and you'd be right. Make sure that you're comfortable in whatever you're wearing, it'll reflect on how composed you are during your interview. As long as you put in the effort to look nice and professional, you'll be fine. It's an interview, you're being judged based on your resume and composure, not what you're wearing.

I will be wearing this on interviews. It will serve the exact same function as your $260 watch, but I'll have $245 left over to buy an airplane ticket. Winning at what time was it again?

I like this bag, but I'm a little worried it will be a carry-on issue for regional flights. I've got a few of those transfers

I am a little bit too. I'll let you know after this weekend if I have any issues.

Thanks let me know. At this point, I think I might just wear a suit on the plane. Not the ideal option, but definitely better than getting gate checked.

I'm jealous of you actually. Watches are a very expensive hobby (one that I really don't have the money for as a student). Love that Casio. Might have to get one myself.

As someone who grew up quite poor and is now closer to middle class but still has the mindset of a much poorer person, I find the idea of spending several hundred dollars on a watch or a pair of shoes quite horrifying and almost comical. I guess if I had any interest whatsoever in fashion or clothes I would change my mindset as my income rises, though.

Either way, I'll be secretly mirin' you good-smelling guys rocking those well-tailored suits...

Hey guys,

Just wanted to warn you not to directly iron your suits. An iron will leave a shiny spot on many suits that's permanent. As another poster said, if your suit is wrinkled, hanging it in the bathroom with the door closed and HOT water steaming up the shower works well. If you absolutely must iron it, put a thin damp cloth (like a damp washcloth) in between the suit fabric and the surface of the iron. (Your hotel will have an iron in the closet. No need to pack one.)

Also, many people put clothes in the dryer with a damp cloth to remove wrinkles. DON'T do this with suits. You'll end up with permanent shiny patches all over the fabric.

Good luck to everyone preparing for interviews! :luck:
