so if an interviewer asks "where else did you apply"...I understand that they are not supposed to really ask this, and that you do not have to answer, but it seems inappropriate to not answer

last year, i was asked at 2 different interviews where else i applied. i'm wondering for this year, if i interview of course, and they ask....how do i answer since instead of naming 7 other schools, i now have a list of 24 other schools? i can't name them.....and if feel that answering "24 other schools" will be saying "i am not confident about my chances"

thanks...i think this can help others, that's why i'm actually posting it

i'm applying to about 35, i don't even think i will remember all of them. if i were to be asked, i would just mention why i am applying to so many schools and list some schools and reasons, like new york schools cos i am in new york, and then mention that particular school and drool all over it...

would it be possible to answer in a more general sense? like if you said, "well i applied to a variety of schools along the east coast based on programs that i felt suited my interests" etc. i'm just trying to think of a way that you could answer the question without actually giving away a list of schools--after all, the question isn't saying "what are the names of all the other schools you applied to?"

yeah man
it's a rapid fire thing to test you under pressure... quickly, quickly!

"what are the names of all the other schools you applied to?"
"which of those schools has the most vowels?"
"bread goes in, toast comes out, what's that about?"
"do you plan to eat a lot of bread in medical school?"
"where would you want to buy your bread?"
"Any of the schools you applied to give you free bread? This one doesn't. Any questions?"

i like bread. a lot. in fact, i could eat an entire meal of olive garden breadsticks or red lobster biscuits.

but i think those questions would scare me away from bread for the rest of my life.

That's really the only reason to go there anyway.

And then you'd have to explain it to your friends: "I turned down one med school because they were giving me a creepy bread vibe."

lol....

But in all seriousness, some schools do not let their interviewers know where you're applying(case western for sure because I blurted out where else I interviewed and he told me he's not suppose to know but he was interested in what i was going to say anyways. And then I got accepted off the waitlist in May)

Sometimes it's also good to reply with "I applied to schools all over the US. I'm trying to maximize my chances, you'd understand." That's an honest and thoughtful answer dont you guys think?

Along the same line... I have a book that is not specifically an Interview book but it's one of those "Self Help" books. It talks about how to make people like you. It's very short but the information in it is quite good. "Get anyone to Like you" was the title I think. Skim through it, it'll help.

but ya know, it would make me happy to walk away from an interview with a free loaf of bread. that would probably sell me on the school.

and actually, my friend went to a baseball game recently and came home with two free loaves of bread. probably the most random thing ever...

Never, ever turn down free bread.
There could be a gold brick in there.

you know

"surprise! you got the special gold brick bread!"

and then there are instructions as to how you should go about cashing in your gold brick.

yeah, they're fine... just eat around the stomata.

edit: i am also amused. It's kind of like a block party and we're jumping from house to house, looking for pasta. Or free bread. Perferrably both are free.

I was asked this question last year. I named a couple of schools and then gave generalizations (east coast). I would have told him if he asked me again more specifically, but he didn't :)

Amen to that.

My friend works as a server at Red Lobster and he'll have "bread parties" where he invites a few friends and we just scarf down biscuits until we (I  ) feel like I'm going to throw up.

Ah, good times.
