I'm getting ready to apply for my PGY 2 in Neurology and was wondering if people can talk about what the stats are for getting interviews at places...i'm not saying to only include the top 5 neuro programs in the nation but just a general sense...i've heard that its really not about the USMLE score in neuro except at the big academic powerhouses...so for the average American Grad Osteopathic or Allopathic what gets you that interview??? and also does applying early make a diff?

What gets you an interview is a difficult question for anyone to answer simply because each program more than likely has different criteria. Probably something as obvious as good grades and good evals gets your foot in the door and your brilliant personality gets the rest of you through the door.

As far as applying early, I don't think it matters. This is not a rolling admission like med school. But it is important to get your application in before the deadlines. Deadlines vary, but most programs do NOT start interviewing until after the deadlines, at least as far as I can tell.

Methyldopa is right. Don't believe anyone who tries to tell you how schools make the interview list. Last year, some chump was spouting off that there was a "lower limit" USMLE score, and if you were below that, there was no way you were going to get an onterview at the top places. Well, I was one point below, and I didn't have trouble getting interviews...

Dude, all we do is just jump through BS hoops and its essentially a matter of luck and whether or not the person reading your CAS wants to meet you...I've heard stories of people with like 180's on step I interview at top dog institutions which i think is good because i think it should def. be about the whole app and not one freaking mornings results. WHo knows though...we are just a bunch of hoop jumping monkey's that get lucky here or there....as you can see i've had one of those days on the wards that makes you cynical about this hold damn thing....Now i'm sure 100 other people will respond with how much they love their lives nad medicine is amazing, but the reality is SOME DAYS BLOW!!! thanks methyl and Gopher for being realists and not being the guys who talk about how perfect their applications are and how every program deserves them...

come on Neuro Peeps...pipe in some more info on interview stats...i.e people who interviewed at BU or UCSD did you have 250's or more like 150's???
