Has anyone else heard about their position on the waitlist? They said they were going to tell us today, but I have received nothing yet. Starting to think it might be delayed if they already decided to start pulling people.

I never got a message but on the portal right under where it says confirmed alternate it now has my number!

You can always call OASA or send a message through your portal if you didn't get your waitlist rank. Something may have slipped through the cracks, or they could be busier than they expected. Just be polite about it (asking when you'll hear vs. demanding your rank).
 
Does anyone know how quickly the list moves or by how much typically?? I'm 61 and feeling kind of defeated

Could be worse, I'm 78 lol. I had looked through some of the previous threads and it looks like they get into the 50s/60s pretty often and that's just from SDN, not everyone is on here. One year's thread (2 years ago I think) they got to 90, but that was also a super late August call.
 
If it helps, there's only 85 people in the Facebook group so far, so a lot of people haven't confirmed their seat!

I heard about mine awhile ago. In fact, I got another email confirming I had a scholarship Thursday (because there were problems with my FAFSA).
I would email Dr Andreasen (spelled close to right, I hope??) and ask.
 
I heard when Iowa calculates science GPAs, they only count the biology and chemistry. Is this true? I read somewhere on SDN not to apply if your chemistry grades aren't the greatest.

There's a bit more to it than that.

If you take a look at ISU's pre-reqs (https://vetmed.iastate.edu/student/...he-college/pre-veterinary-requirements/course), you'll see that several courses have an asterisk next to them. The asterisk denotes that these classes are used in calculating the science GPA. These include gen chem 1 and 2, organic chem 1 and 2, biochem, physics, general biology 1 and 2, genetics, and mammalian anatomy/physiology. Altogether, that's five chemistries, one physics, and four biologies. So your chem grades, if they're really poor (so, say, mostly Cs) definitely have the potential to lower your science GPA by quite a bit. It may be something to keep in mind if they're not the best, but I wouldn't necessarily let it deter you from applying altogether if the grades you've got in the rest of the included science classes are solid. Lord knows my marks in chem weren't the greatest in the world... two Bs (gen chem 1 and organic chem 1), two Cs (gen chem 2 and biochem), and two As (medicinal chem, which admittedly isn't counted here, and organic chem 2). But my other sciences were pretty much all As, so YMMV.

A in organic chem 2? GO YOU. I probably should have read on the website a little more, I wish every school did that. I feel like it's so hard to calculate the science GPA because some schools will take this or that and others won't. Regardless, thank you so much for the information. I didn't want to write off any school till I knew the information. Also, I love your avi😛

Ha, no problem! And I just really had an affinity for organic chem, especially 2. I found mechanisms and synthesis/retroactive synthesis problems super fun. 😉

Quick question. I've been looking over the VM1 book order form, and... I'm a little lost. I know we need to pre-order with a minimum $100 deposit by July 3rd. Ideally, I'd like to get most of the recommended material along with everything that is required, but there is no way I'll have the money to pay for the remaining balance come orientation on my current salary (if I'm reading the "Information from the Bookstore" PDF correctly, we pick up our orders at orientation). Scraping by on minimum wage right now, so I just want to ask... does our financial aid disperse before orientation or afterward? I'm really, really hoping that it is the former or I will have to work something else out. Thanks!

You can call financial aid for a definitive answer, they're really helpful. I don't remember the date from first year. Is the orientation schedule posted yet? They send you in your little orientation groups to the bookstore to pick stuff up. You find out your group at orientation.

I also didn't order all of the books. I think Miller's for anatomy was helpful. The required Histo/Phys texts are available online through the library. The required Radiology text is available online through the library, but the Thrall text is not online, and it's useful when you take radiology again 3rd year. I recommend waiting for the stethoscope fair to buy your stethoscope so you can try them out and find one you like, rather than ordering ahead of time.

If you do not receive your financial aid in time, the bookstore will hold your books for you. You will definitely have financial aid by the first day of school so you can come and pick them up then 🙂. They are more than willing to help you out where they can (they are all vet students too so they know how it is 🙂)

I would look for used books online to purchase instead of buying from the bookstore - if you look around, you can get books for almost half the cost of a new one from ISU. I've gone here for 4 years and I'll be here for 4 more as a vet student and I have definitely been burned by the bookstore as a freshman.
 
Yes I bought all required and recommended books from Amazon for under 1k and it was almost 2k from bookstore

How important is it to have a car with 4 wheel drive in Ames and Des Moines?
 
Can anyone tell me how their interview went this cycle? Was it really an hr long interview? Were the questions behavioral or just the typical "what's your experience" "what are you goals" kinds of questions....thanks in advance!

You're slated one full hour for your interview, but from I've seen (and from my own experience), it typically lasts 45-50 minutes. It is a behavioral interview. I looked over the SDN Interview Feedback page for ISU-CVM to have an idea of what they may ask, as well as devise some possible scenarios from my experiences to build off of in response, and I felt extremely prepared come the actual interview. 🙂

I've lived in Iowa my whole life! Don't need four wheel drive, but DEFINITELY don't want rear-wheel only in the winter. It can get very snowy and icy.

Mine only lasted about 35-40 min. I'm pretty sure I did well. The previous questions on the SDN interview page were very helpful!
 
Does anyone else think its really weird that our white coat ceremony is before school starts?

My interview went a little over my one hour time slot. I really got along well with the interviewers, and we talked a lot outside of purely just questions and answers. The SDN interview questions were spot on preparation for me! I was extremely well prepared, which made me not nervous at all once we got started.
 
Does anyone know of any other trailers that are going to be available soon? I check Old Orchard site everyday and ISU but neither one has added anything in weeks. I'm looking to but a place that is in walking distance.

Just wanted to let other c/o 2020ers know that you can now schedule your appointments for the fall rabies vaccination clinic by calling Thielen Health Center, in case anyone is interested in that; they start on September 13th. Make sure you've got your student ID number on you!
 
Does anyone know if we get buddies? My friend is in PA school and they have them and I think it sounds fun!

Ok so I have kind of given up on looking for a trailer - now I ask does anyone have or know of a room available? The page on Iowa is out of date and everything seems to be full. I do have a cat who will be coming with me.

A quick textbook-related question for current students: I've gone ahead and purchased all of the required books (just waiting on Coulson to get here), as well as Thrall's since it sounds like that one is very helpful later on. I've got the big Miller's (Anatomy of the Dog); do you think it would be worth the money to buy the recommended little Miller's (Guide to the Dissection of the Dog), too? Or is the big Miller's sufficient for the first semester anatomy course?
